Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

    Key takeaways
    • Choose Oaxaca for authentic culture, Día de los Muertos, mezcal, surfers at Puerto Escondido, and quieter natural wonders.
    • Pick Seoul instead of Tokyo for fall foliage at Changdeokgung Palace and Bukhansan, street style, K-beauty, and standout dining.
    • Visit Montréal for classic fall colors, seasonal markets, and cultural festivals like the Montréal International Black Film Festival and Mois du Créole.

If social media’s buzziest fall getaway destinations are not your vibe, choose between equally enticing alternatives that’ll give you fresh experiences to flex on your feed.

As you may already know, leaf-peeping hotspots, city breaks, and warm-weather paradises are standard during this time of year. And no one can deny the allure of places like Tulum, Tokyo, Miami, Paris, or a foliage-filled New England gem. But if you’re craving a less predictable destination that’s still uniquely fulfilling, the options below are waiting for you to explore.

Below, scroll through top alternative fall destinations for the season’s typical getaways, and learn how to make your trip more than just Instagram-worthy.

Instead Of Tulum Or Mexico City, Choose Oaxaca

Stunning Tulum. It offers luxury hotels, wellness experiences, and vibrant beach clubs. Meanwhile, Mexico City is a must-visit food destination that promises unlimited tacos and culture embedded in every plate.

But to ditch influencer-inspired itineraries and go somewhere less on the radar, Oaxaca is a great choice. The destination is one of Mexico’s 31 states, and its capital city shares the same name. Late October and early November make for a particularly culturally enriching trip, as Día de los Muertos celebrations in the city will surround you.

For foodies, Oaxaca presents the chance to sip mezcal at mezcalerías and enjoy traditional Oaxaqueño food. The state also includes destinations like Puerto Escondido, a surfer’s escape in September and October, and Hierve el Agua, a natural wonder with rock formations that look like frozen waterfalls and swimmable mineral springs that’ll be less crowded than in summer. More fall-esque, there’s also San José del Pacífico with chillier weather, fog, and cabins in the lush mountains. Elsewhere, in towns along the Costa Chica (like Chacahua and Cuajinicuilapa), you can meet local Afro-Mexican communities and learn about their traditions.

    Instead Of Tokyo, Choose Seoul

Tokyo is one of the world’s best year-round destinations. And in the fall, travelers especially love it for its vibrant seasonal foliage, mild weather, and harvest-driven dishes.

But instead of snapping pics at the city’s iconic Shibuya Crossing, wandering Seoul will offer a balanced alternative. You’ll still have opportunities for worthwhile leaf-peeping if you go between mid-October and early November. Changdeokgung Palace (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Namsan Park (perfect for a daytime stroll), and Bukhansan National Park are all perfect for witnessing the changing colors. With some easy planning, you’ll also experience the Korean capital’s unique pace, street style, K-beauty retailers, and hotspot restaurants. Those will all definitely make your trip stand out from a Tokyo photo dump.

Instead Of Miami, Choose San Juan

San Juan is anything but an obscure destination. That said, it’s still a nice alternative if you want to avoid Miami’s status-driven culture during a short fall getaway. And while it’s in the Caribbean, Americans won’t need passports to catch flights.

You can do back-to-back fancy dinners, club hopping, and beach days in San Juan like you would in The 305. However, Puerto Rico’s capital is also a perfect destination to wander locally, taking in its colorful Spanish colonial architecture, many historical sites, and multiculturally influenced local cuisine. San Juan is also close to Loíza (home to many Afro-Boricua residents and culture), El Yunque (the only tropical rainforest in the National Forest System), and Río Grande (perfect for playing golf).

    Instead Of Paris, Choose Marseille

Paris is a classic, quintessential fall break destination. This time of year, tourists love seeing Fashion Week’s street style, the seasonal exhibits at the Louvre, and the subtle fall foliage as trees shift to yellow, golden, and amber hues.

Three hours away by train, Marseille in autumn offers slower-paced Mediterranean charm with fewer crowds and more affordability than in the summer. The city’s scenic beaches will still be swimmable, though lifeguards likely won’t be present. For seafood lovers, October is arguably the best time to visit, as daily catches will be at their most flavorful. Moreover, the delicacy of sea urchin will start hitting tables.

Instead Of A Destination In New England, Choose Montréal

There’s Stowe in Vermont, the Berkshires in Massachusetts, and New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway. Popular — and rightfully so — leaf peeping in New England doesn’t get better than the experiences at those iconic seasonal sites.

But if you’re tired of seeing snapshots on social media from the same viewpoints at those fall foliage hotspots, adventuring to Montréal will be worth your while. The city offers some of the best of classic cozy fall getaways, including scenic fall colors, seasonal markets, apple-picking experiences, and mild to cool temperatures. But what makes Montréal stand out as an alternative to New England’s offerings is the Canadian city’s array of fall festivals and cultural programming. They include the Montréal International Black Film Festival (Canada’s largest film festival focused on Black cinema) and Mois du Créole (a multidisciplinary celebration of Creole roots and culture in the Greater Quebec area, including the performing arts, food, and community gatherings).
