Army Veteran Edwin Fuller Continues to Inspire

ERIE, Pa. — Every generation has its storytellers. At The Residence at Presque Isle Bay, one of the most treasured is 101-year-old U.S. Army veteran Edwin Fuller, whose life experiences continue to inspire residents and team members alike.

For more than two years, Fuller has been an enthusiastic member of the senior living community, where his warm personality and gift for storytelling have made him a beloved presence. Whether recalling life during the World War II era, reflecting on decades of change in America or sharing humorous moments from his past, Fuller has a unique ability to transport listeners to another time.

“Ed’s stories are more than entertaining,” said Linsley Wybiral, Community Relations Director at The Residence at Presque Isle Bay. “Those stories preserve history, spark meaningful conversations and remind younger generations of the resilience and character that defined what has often been called America’s Greatest Generation.”

Before sharing one of his many stories, Fuller is quick to point out that the lessons he’s learned over more than a century are just as important as the tales themselves. His stories may preserve history for others, but they also reflect the values that have guided his own life. Gratitude, resilience, staying active and putting family first. Those simple principles, he says, are the foundation of a long life well lived.

“I enjoy telling stories,” Fuller said. “I’ve been around 101 years. Going with the flow is the key to a long and happy life. Staying active helps keep you healthy. Family is the most important part of life. Cherish your family.”

Fuller served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army 463rd Army Air Force BaseUnit from 1945 to 1946. Although he did not see combat, he answered his country’s call during one of the most pivotal periods in world history. His honorable service helped support the military’s mission as World War II drew to a close, joining millions of Americans who worked together to secure victory and lay the foundation for lasting peace.

Like so many veterans of his era, Fuller rarely seeks recognition for his service. Instead, he quietly shares the lessons he learned through military life, hard work and a century of living. Those conversations have become part of what makes The Residence at Presque Isle Bay such a special place.

“Ed has an incredible way of bringing history to life,” Wybiral said. “When he tells a story, everyone stops to listen. His experiences create connections between generations. We’re honored to have him as part of our community.”

After his military service, Fuller became a machinist and later was the maintenance director for the Erie Housing Authority until his retirement in 1990. He and his late wife enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and square dancing. They raised a family together.

At The Residence at Presque Isle Bay, Fuller’s impact reaches far beyond his ability to share a good story. Residents often gather to hear his recollections, while team members enjoy taking a few moments from their day to learn something new from a man who has witnessed more than a century of American history firsthand.

“Ed represents the values of service, humility and perseverance,” said Nathan Maietta, Executive Operations Officer. “We’re privileged to celebrate him not only as a veteran but as someone who enriches the lives of everyone around him. His stories remind us where we’ve come from and inspire us to appreciate the sacrifices made by his generation.”

As communities across the nation look for ways to honor America’s veterans throughout the country’s 250^th celebration, Fuller serves as a reminder that some of history’s most valuable lessons aren’t found in textbooks, but instead may be shared one conversation at a time.

At 101 years old, he continues to serve in his own meaningful way.

“Through every story he tells, he preserves memories, builds friendships and brightens the lives of those fortunate enough to listen,” Maietta said. “Ed’s military service deserves lasting gratitude, and his storytelling has become an enduring gift to the community he now calls home.”
