Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

    Key takeaways
    • U.S. News ranked 2026-2027 travel rewards using a scoring algorithm that weighted category-specific components differently.
    • American Airlines AAdvantage named best airline rewards; strong domestic network, award flight availability, and 1,000+ partner companies.
    • Alaska’s Atmos Rewards, United MileagePlus, JetBlue TrueBlue, and Delta SkyMiles rounded out the airline Top 5.
    • Wyndham Rewards ranked No. 1 for hotels due to easy free-night earning and over 8,000 participating properties across multiple brands.
    • Choose airline or hotel programs based on travel habits; focusing loyalty helps climb status and unlock more perks.

Though registering for a travel rewards program is easy, deciphering which one will be most beneficial to join is often what deters travelers from signing up at all.

The world of travel rewards programs can be complex, encompassing loyalty statuses, tiers, point systems, and airlines and hotels — each with its own benefits and regulations. And while the offerings can be overwhelming, the promise of perks like free flights and hotel stays is often just too good to pass up.

In its annual report, U.S. News shared its rankings for 2026-2027’s best travel reward programs, including those for airlines and hotels. The source disclosed that it ranked frequent-flyer and hotel loyalty programs using a scoring algorithm that weighted category-specific components differently.

For the best airline rewards programs, American Airlines AAdvantage ranked No. 1. A strength that secured the crown for the carrier was having the United States’ largest domestic network. American Airlines reportedly also offers notable award flight availability to its members trying to redeem their miles. Moreover, the brand has over 1,000 partner companies with which its loyalty program members can collect and redeem miles.

Consecutively, the other airline reward programs that ranked on this year’s Top 5 list were Alaska’s Atmos Rewards, United’s MileagePlus, JetBlue’s TrueBlue, and Delta’s SkyMiles.

And regarding the best hotel reward programs, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts ranked No. 1. U.S. News ranked the Wyndham Rewards program highest in part due to the ease with which loyalty members can earn a free night. Additionally, the over 8,000 properties that participate in the program across Days Inn, Dolce Hotels and Resorts, La Quinta, Ramada, and Wyndham Grand destinations were noted as another plus.

Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, Choice Privileges, and Sonesta Travel Pass consecutively comprised the top 5 other best hotel reward programs on the list.

Are Airline Or Hotel Rewards More Important?

Whether airline or hotel rewards are more important really depends on the traveler and their priorities. Because every rewards program has its own unique set of perks, upgrades, and benefits, it’s important that travelers familiarize themselves with the options that come their way.

It’s worth keeping in mind that the more loyalty you display in a rewards program, the higher the status you may achieve with that particular brand. That said, rather than joining multiple travel rewards programs, many travelers find it most beneficial to climb the status ladder with the brands they fly and stay with most.
