Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

    Key takeaways
    • New York City: A diaspora microcosm with walkable neighborhoods like Harlem, famed museums and diverse Black cuisines.
    • New Orleans: Leisurely strolls through French Quarter, Tremé’s historic Black sites, live music and vibrant street culture.
    • Washington, D.C.: Home to the National Museum of African American History & Culture, Black-owned restaurants, cafes and lively nightlife hubs.
    • Atlanta: Hub for Black entrepreneurship, entertainment and HBCU communities; explore the Beltline, Trap Music Museum and dynamic dining scene.
    • Richmond: A creative underground arts scene with street murals, collaborative events, Jackson Ward culture and the Black History Museum & Cultural Center.

The United States is filled with destinations where Black solo travelers can comfortably settle into culture, community, and connection — even if it’s their first time traveling alone.

These destinations are easy to navigate and full of attractions, making them appealing options for solo travelers. What’s particularly special about them, however, is the opportunity to connect with local Black history, culture, cuisine, and communities. Whether you’re interested in exploring on your own or making your trip a little more social, you’ll find plenty of spaces where you can connect with locals and fellow travelers along the way.

10 U.S. Destinations For Black Solo Travelers

    New York City

New York City is one of the best U.S. destinations for Black solo travelers because it’s a microcosm of the diaspora. In a city of over 8.5 million, you’ll find Black Americans from all over the country – including the city itself – and Black immigrants from all over the world. The city is also extremely walkable and has a transportation system that makes it easy to get around to different neighborhoods, restaurants, and community events.

Harlem is a rewarding place to wander and explore. All within the neighborhood are the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Apollo Theater, the Studio Museum, and the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute. Between those visits, places like Melba’s Restaurant, Bentham, and Island Grill Harlem Modern Caribbean Kitchen showcase the neighborhood’s variety of restaurants and cuisines.

Solo travelers may also enjoy taste-testing Caribbean dishes across Crown Heights and Flatbush in Brooklyn.

    New Orleans

New Orleans is one of the best U.S. cities for travelers to wander at a leisurely pace. Even if you don’t have an itinerary, you’ll find yourself naturally preoccupied as you stroll the French Quarter, browse the French Market’s stalls, listen to live music in the streets, and eat beignets at Loretta’s Authentic Pralines (there are two locations in the city). A must-visit area is Tremé, the country’s oldest African American neighborhood. Within walking distance are Louis Armstrong Park, the New Orleans Jazz Museum, the Backstreet Cultural Museum, and the New Orleans African American Museum.

This is a city where Black solo travelers can easily get lost in the crowd if they want to, or make new connections. Either way, they’re sure to leave NOLA with lifelong memories.

    Washington, D.C.

This list wouldn’t be complete without Washington, D.C. The Nation’s Capital is a walkable city with a solid metro system where Black culture and community are woven into its fabric. You can easily pack a multi-day itinerary with local Black history, businesses, cuisines, and nightlife spots.

For starters, head to Grounded, a popular Black-owned cafe that’s also a plant shop and wellness studio. Also, make time for the poignant and celebratory National Museum of African American History & Culture, which is absolutely worth visiting or revisiting.

D.C. also boasts several Black-owned and/or chef-led contemporary fine dining restaurants. To name a few, those include Dōgon, Elmina, and the newly opened St. Croix. And if you plan to tap into the city’s Black nightlife scene, Cafe Saint-Ex, Wild Days, and 12 Stories are all local favorite hotspots.

    Atlanta

With time to walk the Beltline, shop in Buckhead, and dine in Midtown, Black solo travelers in Atlanta can easily immerse themselves in the social scene. Undeniably, the city is a hub of Black entrepreneurship, beauty, and entertainment where visitors can network as much as they make new personal connections. Home to three HBCUs (Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University) and a large Divine 9 community, many Black solo travelers can also lean on those to tap into kinship and conversation during their visit.

To keep the itinerary interesting, solo travelers should also visit the Trap Music Museum, see a show at the True Colors Theatre, and/or visit historical sites at Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park.

    Richmond

Richmond is one of the best U.S. destinations for Black solo travelers who are creative and love the underground arts scene. The city’s heartbeat is pumped by its musicians, DJs, photographers, designers, and multidisciplinary artists who largely value collaboration and expression. That makes the city full of street murals to snap for Instagram, creative events, and inspiration for your next projects.

Regarding where to visit, the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia is a notable choice. Also worth including in your itinerary are Mama J’s Kitchen (a soul food spot in Jackson Ward) and the Urban Hang Suite RVA (a coffee, wine bar, and gathering space). The latter sits where the Arts District, Downtown, and Jackson Ward meet, making it a perfect starting point for solo travelers in Richmond.

    Philadelphia

While Philadelphia is a great city to explore for history buffs, it offers much more than its prominent past. The city is a vibrant, vital home to many Black-owned businesses, with their doors open to locals and visitors alike. So in between your history and landmark tours, you’ll also be able to invest in and support the local Black community.

If your solo travel adventure will include book hunting, check out the historic Hakim’s Bookstore (the oldest Black-owned bookstore in the city) and Harriett’s Bookshop (a unique “avant-garde” bookstore that celebrates women authors and activists). At the Colored Girls Museum, explore a unique, mindfully curated archive of Black women’s stories and experiences. Elsewhere, pop into and support Black-owned businesses including Dope Botanicals (an herbal wellness store and apothecary), Loomen Labs (a fragrance shop), and Common Ground (a consignment sneaker and streetwear store).

    Detroit

As a U.S. destination for Black solo travelers, the Motor City is not to be underrated. Thanks to its storied past and dynamic present, The D is a place where travelers can dive into Black music, entrepreneurship, culture, and ingenuity that have shaped the world. In the Midtown and Cultural Center areas, solo travelers can easily spend a day museum hopping. Their options include the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Also around there is Source Booksellers, a Black-owned indie bookstore where you can pick up a new read or attend an author event.

Some may want to tap into the legacy of Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, two adjoining, prominent former historically Black neighborhoods. If you had your sights set on visiting the Motown Museum in New Center, it’s currently undergoing renovations and has plans to reopen in 2027.

    Boston

Don’t underestimate Boston as a place where you can enjoy wandering the locale. The city is a cultural melting pot with notable Jamaican, Haitian, and Cape Verdean communities. Those diasporas contribute to the city’s thriving food scene, which has several Black chefs at the helm. Boston offers plenty of adventure as a food destination, with trips to Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester, Hyde Park, and the South End promising flavor to your taste buds.

Also on their itinerary, solo travelers should take time to learn about the Black Heritage Trail’s landmarks. They can also support the businesses in and around Nubian Square. Moreover, they can visit the Museum of African American History and the National Center of Afro-American Artists.

    Chicago

In the Chi, one day should definitely be dedicated to exploring Bronzeville – aka the “Black Metropolis.” In that neighborhood, start at the historic DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, the country’s oldest independent Black museum. Also in the area is the Gallery Guichard, which features works from artists across the African Diaspora. For food and drinks, you’ll definitely want to check out the Bronzeville Winery, a Black-owned restaurant and wine bar.

For solo travelers exploring Uptown, check out the Haitian American Museum of Chicago and the Black Ensemble Theater.

    Memphis

As a top U.S. destination for Black solo travelers, Memphis is a hub of Black entrepreneurship, music, history, and culture that’s distinctive and set apart from everywhere else on the list. During A Tour of Possibilities, you can learn about African American cultural sites across the city, with stops including the National Civil Rights Museum, the Stax Museum of American Soul, and the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum.

While on Beale Street, solo travelers have the chance to embrace Memphis as the “Home of the Blues.” The music venues and history, along with the street’s nightlife and restaurants, make it easy to learn, listen, dine, and socialize. Another place to lean into community, along with a good brew, is Cxffeeblack, an award-winning roaster, coffee shop, and gathering space.
