Breakfast Tacos, Barbecue Brisket and Frito Pie Were Ranked as Texas’ Three Most Nostalgic Summer Foods—but Only One Took the Top Spot

In Texas, few food debates are settled without a fight. But when a national survey ranked the summer dishes that bring back the strongest feelings of comfort and home, one Texas favorite smoked the competition.

Breakfast tacos, Brisket and Frito pie all landed among the state’s three most nostalgic summer foods—but only one claimed the No. 1 spot.

Barbecue brisket topped the Texas ranking, followed by Frito pie at No. 2 and breakfast tacos at No. 3.

The findings came from a nationwide survey commissioned by mental health treatment provider A Mission for Michael. Cherry Data Signals surveyed 3,011 respondents to identify the regional summer foods most closely associated with comfort, childhood memories and a sense of belonging.

The survey also explored how familiar recipes, shared meals and seasonal traditions can affect people’s moods and connections to home.

Brisket Takes the Texas Crown

Texas’ three highest-ranking nostalgic summer foods were:

1. Barbecue Brisket

Slow-smoked brisket took the top spot as the food that most “feels like home” in Texas.

Seasoned, smoked for hours and sliced only after a dark bark has formed around the meat, brisket often becomes the centerpiece of family cookouts and summer gatherings. It is commonly served with pickles, onions, bread and traditional barbecue sides.

But the experience begins long before the first slice reaches the table. The smell of wood smoke, hours spent around the smoker and anticipation of the first cut all contribute to brisket’s nostalgic pull.

2. Frito Pie

Frito pie finished second, proving that a simple combination of corn chips, chili and cheese remains firmly embedded in Texas food culture.

Often topped with onions or jalapeños—and sometimes served directly from an opened chip bag—Frito pie is commonly associated with football games, fairs, cookouts and community events.

Its appeal is rooted partly in its simplicity: crunchy, savory, filling and just messy enough to be memorable.

3. Breakfast Tacos

Breakfast tacos claimed the third spot.

Filled with combinations of eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, beans or cheese, breakfast tacos are a familiar start to the day across Texas. They can be picked up from a neighborhood restaurant, prepared in a family kitchen or wrapped to take along on a summer road trip.

For many Texans, their comfort comes from familiarity and the nearly endless combinations available.

Southern Favorites Range From Catfish to Cobbler

Texas was not the only Southern state whose choices reflected long-standing food traditions. Fried catfish ranked first in both Alabama and Mississippi. Georgia residents chose peach cobbler, while Louisiana selected the crawfish boil.

Chicken-fried steak topped Oklahoma’s list, pulled pork barbecue led in Tennessee and Missouri residents selected Kansas City-style burnt ends.

Elsewhere, New England clam chowder ranked first in Massachusetts, while Vermont residents chose the maple creemee, a maple-flavored soft-serve treat.

Familiar Foods Bring Happiness and Comfort

The survey found that nostalgic foods carry an emotional connection extending beyond taste. When respondents were asked which feeling they most strongly associated with their favorite summer comfort food:

• 26% selected happiness and enjoyment.
• 22% selected a sense of home.
• 20% associated the food with childhood nostalgia.
• 15% selected comfort and reassurance.
• 10% associated it with family connections.
• 4% selected excitement about summer.
• 3% associated it with pride in where they came from.

Overall, 84% said eating a familiar summer dish improved their mood.

Regional food also contributed to how respondents viewed their home states. One in five said local food was extremely important to their sense of state pride.

“Food has a remarkable ability to connect people with a particular place, person or period in their lives,” Anand Meta, executive director of A Mission for Michael, said in the survey release. “These findings show that a familiar summer dish can offer much more than enjoyment in the moment. It can restore a sense of belonging, preserve family traditions and provide a small but meaningful source of comfort when somebody is far from home.”

In Texas, at least according to this survey, the food most likely to create that feeling is a tray of smoked brisket—even if Frito pie and breakfast taco fans are not ready to concede.
