The high school track and field season in Georgia closed out with some memorable performances at the GHSA State Track and Field meets held in May at the University of Georgia, but some local stars carried their success stories to the national stage in June.
Windsor Forest graduate Jhordan Brooks had a big-time showing in the Adidas Track Nationals held in Greensboro, North Carolina from June 18-21 as the sprinter ran a personal best time to finish third in the 100 meters.
Richmond Hill grad Kendrick Joshua went to the Nike Outdoor Nationals at the University of Oregon’s venerable Hayward Field and finished second in the long jump and eighth in the 400-meter hurdles. Joshua was also part of the mixed 4×400 meter relay team that took home a gold medal in the national meet in Oregon.
Brooks was coming off a second place finish in the 100 meters with a then-personal best time of 10.46 at the Class 3A state meet, where he also finished second in the 200 in 21.47. He blew away his personal best at the Adidas meet in the 100 meter prelims with a time of 10.36 (ran into a 1.6 mph headwind) and followed up with a 10.37 in the finals to finish third against some of the top sprinters in the country.
The 10.36 time that Brooks ran in North Carolina was the best in Georgia this year, across all classifications.
Brooks, who recently signed to compete at Voorhees University in South Carolina, said he and his training partner, Paul Mosley, the former Savannah Country Day star who went on to become a Division II All-American at Lynn University before transferring to FSU, have been concentrating on his starts.

“I have a good reaction time, but we’ve been focusing on my angles and making sure that my first three steps out of the blocks are straight,” Brooks said. And I’ve been trying to make sure that my first steps aren’t too long and my times are getting better. Finishing third at the nationals was important, but I try to stay humble. I don’t want my confidence level to be too high, or too low. I’ve put in a lot of work to get the school record, and it’s paid off.
Joshua has signed to compete at the University of Georgia. He set a Georgia all-classification state record in the 300-meter hurdles this year with a time of 35.60, a mark that was third best in the nation. He won that event at the Class 6A state meet and was second in the long jump.
Competing in the U-20 classification in the Nike Outdoor Nationals, Joshua was eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.99. He finished second in the long jump with a personal best leap of 23-10.75 on his only attempt as he had to leave the meet early to catch a plane back home. Joshua’s long jump mark was the best across all classification’s in Georgia this season.
Joshua also ran the third leg of the mixed 4×400 meter relay team, featuring Richmond Hill standouts, that won in 3:28.14 as they competed for the Coastal Georgia Track team under coach Isaiah Taylor.
Jayden Taylor ran the first leg, followed by Maleaha Pritchett, with Joshua on the third leg and rising sophomore Trinity Perine running anchor.

Taylor has signed to compete at Southern Mississippi and was an All-Greater Savannah first-team selection last month, along with Pritchett, Perine and Joshua, who was selected as the Co-Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year along with Bradwell Institute’s Jacobi Pasley.
Bethesda track athlete signs with Valpairaiso
Bethesda graduate Christopher Wright signed to compete with the Valparaiso Track and Field team in a ceremony at Bethesda on June 22.

Wright started competing in track and field for the first time as a junior at Bethesda.
As a senior, he ran a personal best time of 15.60 in the 110-meter hurdles to win the SCISA Division II State title and doubled up to win the 400 meter hurdles in 1:00.29, as he repeated as the state champ in both events.
