Savannah, GA – 9/23/2025— The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has made history again with the appointment of its first African American chief deputy. Sheriff Richard Coleman has appointed McArthur Holmes as the First African American Chief Deputy in the agency’s nearly three centuries of existence.

    Key takeaways

    • Chief Deputy Holmes brings over 40 years of experience with a focus on community-centered law enforcement and jail operations.
    • In his new role Holmes will oversee daily operations, manage staff, and support the sheriff, signaling progress and inclusivity.

Founded in 1732, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is the oldest sheriff’s office in the State of Georgia and one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the United States. This appointment marks a pivotal moment not only in the department’s history but also in the continued advancement of diversity and leadership in public service.

“Some things in life happen just in time, right on time, or all in time,” said Sheriff Richard Coleman. “Chief Deputy Holmes’ promotion is a testament to his unwavering dedication, integrity, and commitment to serving the citizens of Chatham County. We are proud of this moment and look forward to his leadership in this new role.”

Chief Deputy Holmes brings over 40 years of experience, professionalism, and a deep understanding of community focused law enforcement to the position particularly in jail operations. His promotion signals a new chapter for the Sheriff’s Office, one grounded in progress, inclusivity, and service.
