PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla (CBS12) — A South Florida couple who has opened their home to dozens of children is being recognized by the Savannah Bananas through the team’s Bananas Foster initiative.

John and Tammy McGuire were honored during a recent Florida game for their commitment to foster care and adoption, causes that have long been part of their family history.

“My grandmother and grandfather ran an orphanage, and John’s mother adopted a relative placement,” Tammy McGuire said.

The McGuires had children of their own when they decided to become foster parents, believing they could make a difference in the lives of children in need. Over the years, 61 children have stayed in their home.

Their fostering journey eventually led to adoption. After an adoption plan fell through for two children placed in their care, the couple made the decision to adopt them.

“We wanted them to know what forever meant,” Tammy said.

The McGuires say awareness is key to finding homes for children waiting in foster care, especially older youth and those with medical needs.

“Like our son, they all need a forever home,” Tammy said. “There might be a family out there willing to love on a child that needs a home.”

Today, the couple runs The Foster Closet, a nonprofit that provides resources for foster families and support for teens aging out of the foster care system.

“We never knew it would evolve to a charity that helped over a thousand families a year,” John McGuire said.

The McGuires hope their story encourages others to learn more about fostering, adopting and supporting children in need of permanent families.
