How To Make Creamy Herb Roasted Salmon Dip

Start by seasoning the salmon with olive oil, herbs, spices, garlic, and fresh thyme, then roast it alongside the tomatoes until tender, flaky, and flavorful. Allow everything to cool slightly before shredding the salmon and mashing the roasted garlic.

In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded salmon, roasted tomatoes, roasted garlic, mayonnaise, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, relish, herbs, onions, and seasonings. Stir everything together until creamy and well combined.

Serve chilled or slightly warm with crackers, toasted bread, crostini, or fresh vegetables for an easy, flavorful appetizer or snack.

    Ingredients

    Herb Roasted Salmon

    • Wild-Caught Sockeye Salmon. Rich, flaky, and packed with flavor—perfect for creating a hearty, protein-rich dip. Sockeye salmon adds deeper color and richer taste.
    • Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Helps roast the salmon while adding richness and moisture.
    • Black Pepper. Adds subtle heat and depth.
    • Smoked Paprika. Brings smoky warmth and enhances the roasted flavor.
    • Garlic Powder. Adds savory depth throughout the salmon.
    • Dried Oregano, Thyme, Basil, + Parsley. Creates a flavorful herb blend that gives the salmon a fresh, earthy finish.
    • Sea Salt. Balances and enhances all the flavors.
    • Fresh Garlic Cloves. Roast alongside the salmon until soft, sweet, and deeply flavorful.
    • Fresh Thyme Sprigs. Infuse the salmon and tomatoes with aromatic herb flavor.
    • Grape or Cherry Tomatoes. Roast until juicy and slightly caramelized for sweetness and brightness.

    Creamy Dip Base

    • Roasted Herb Salmon. The flavorful, flaky base of the dip.
    • Roasted Garlic. Adds rich, mellow garlic flavor without harshness.
    • Roasted Tomatoes. Bring sweetness, acidity, and extra depth.
    • Red Onion. Adds freshness and a slight crunch. Shallots or sweet onions also work beautifully.
    • Vegan Mayonnaise. Creates the creamy, smooth texture of the dip. Regular mayonnaise works just as well.
    • Lemon Juice. Brightens the dip and balances the richness.
    • Sweet Relish. Adds subtle sweetness and tangy flavor.
    • Dijon Mustard. Adds depth, tanginess, and a slight sharpness.
    • Fresh Dill. Classic herb pairing for salmon that adds freshness and brightness.
    • Fresh Parsley. Adds color and a fresh herb finish.
    • Black Pepper + Garlic Powder + Sea Salt. Final seasoning layers that bring everything together.

    Smoked Salmon Substitution Option

Want an even smokier, more brunch-inspired flavor? Smoked salmon works beautifully in this recipe.

    How to Substitute

    • Replace roasted salmon with smoked salmon
    • Reduce added salt slightly (smoked salmon is saltier)
    • Skip roasting step for the salmon itself

    Flavor Difference

    Roasted Salmon Version

    • Richer and heartier
    • More savory and comforting

    Smoked Salmon Version

    • Smokier and saltier
    • More brunch or café-style flavor

Both are delicious—it just depends on the vibe you want.

Here, I’ve curated a list of baking essentials that I use to achieve my favorite baked goods, especially with this Roasted Salmon Dip recipe. Everything from my fave pots, wooden spoons, parchment paper, and more. SEE THEM HERE!

    Sockeye vs Atlantic Salmon

The main difference between the two: Wild sockeye salmon develop their robust qualities in a vast marine ecosystem, swimming thousands of miles over a lifetime in an epic hunt for food. This is in stark contrast to farm-raised Atlantic salmon, who are typically confined to a net pen — often situated in polluted, coastal waters — where they’re fed engineered pellets that can never truly replace a wild diet.

Of course, the other difference is in their taste: Atlantic salmon is less tasteful than Sockeye salmon and doesn’t pack as much as a punch. Overall, Sockeye has more of a crab-like taste to it and is often considered firm in texture.

Can Sockeye Salmon Be Cooked From Frozen?

Yes! You can actually put your wild salmon right into the oven from the freezer. Add about 8-10 minutes to the cooking time to account for the cold temperature of the fish. I also like to loosely cover the salmon when baking from frozen, tenting it with foil to trap the moisture as it cooks a little longer.

How To Shop For Fresh Sockeye Salmon

I have a little secret for you about seafood: It is almost always frozen immediately after being caught. Freezing fish either right on the fishing boat or at the docks helps kill bacteria and prevent the delicate fish from spoilage. Even the “fresh” fish in the grocery store has usually been frozen and then thawed. So, unless you are lucky enough to live near a sockeye salmon breeding ground, you should skip the “fresh” fish section in your grocery store and go straight to the freezer section for your fish. The frozen sockeye salmon in the grocery store will cost less and it will be the same, high quality.

What To Serve With Creamy Herb Roasted Salmon Dip?

This dip pairs perfectly with so many types of bread + veggies—here are some of my favorites.

    • Crackers (buttery, whole grain, or seeded!)
    • Toasted baguette slices or crostini
    • Pita chips or naan wedges
    • Fresh veggies like cucumbers, carrots, or bell peppers
    • Garlic bread or brioche toast
    • Bagel chips or pretzel thins
    • Dolloped onto baked potatoes or grain bowls for a flavor boost

    Storage + Make-Ahead Tips

    Refrigerator

Store in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.

    Make-Ahead Tip

This dip actually tastes even better after chilling because the flavors have time to develop.

Prepare it a few hours ahead or even the night before.

    Freezing

Not recommended due to the creamy mayo-based texture.

    Serving Tip

    • Serve chilled for a classic dip texture
    • Or slightly warm for a richer, softer consistency

    Prep Time: 10 minutes mins

    Cook Time: 20 minutes mins

    Total Time: 30 minutes mins

    Serves: 8 servings

    HERB ROASTED SALMON:

    • 4 (4-6 ounce) wild-caught Sockeye salmon
    • 2-3 Tbsps Extra virgin olive oil
    • 2 tsps black pepper
    • 2 tsps smoked paprika
    • 2 tsps garlic powder
    • 2 tsps dried oregano
    • 2 tsps dried thyme
    • 2 tsps dried basil
    • 2 tsps dried parsley
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
    • 4 garlic cloves, crushed
    • 4 fresh thyme sprigs
    • 1 cup grape or cherry tomatoes, halved or whole

    CREAMY DIP:

    • Roasted herb salmon, shredded
    • roasted garlic coves, minced (You’ll be using the garlic from the roasted salmon)
    • roasted herb tomatoes (You’ll be using the tomatoes from the roasted salmon)
    • ½ red onion, diced (You can substitute with sweet yellow or white onion or shallots)
    • ½ cup vegan mayonnaise (You can use regular mayonnaise, if desired)
    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (You can use store-bought or make your own Lemon Juice)
    • 1 tablespoon sweet relish
    • 2 tsps djion mustard
    • 2 Tbsps chopped fresh dill (You can use 1 teaspoon of dried dill)
    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • sea salt, for taste

TO ROAST THE SALMON, GARLIC, + TOMATOES:

    • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a small baking sheet with foil paper or use a great nonstick baking griddle.

    • Line the rinsed + patted dry salmon along with the garlic cloves and tomatoes onto the prepared baking sheet or griddle, placing them side by side.

    • Drizzle everything with the olive oil, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, oregano, thyme, basil, and parsley, rubbing everything atop the salmon until completely coated. Add everything to the oven and roast for 20-25 minutes or until salmon is fully cooked through and the tomatoes have become “jammy” and wilted. NOTE: When done, salmon should “flake apart” when touched gently with a fork.

    • Remove from oven and using two forks, gently pull the flesh apart on the salmon until roughly “shredded” and in small-medium chunks. Set aside.

    • Mince the roasted garlic and roughly chop the roasted tomatoes, if desired.

    TO MAKE THE CREAMY DIP:

    • In a bowl, add the shredded roasted salmon, minced roasted garlic, roasted tomatoes along with the vegan mayo, lemon juice, dijon mustard, diced onions, sweet relish, chopped dill, chopped parsley, black pepper, garlic powder, and salt mixing everything together until combined. NOTE: The mixture should look “wet + creamy enough” to scoop together with a spoon.

    • Serve and enjoy with your favorite things like chips, garlic bread, brioche bread, crackers, or fresh chopped vegetables.
    • Bon Appetit!

    • STORAGE: Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, salmon dip, it’s generally best to avoid microwaving and instead opt for gentle heating methods to prevent the salmon from becoming dry and fishy. A low heated oven at a low temperature (300°F) or a low heat skillet can be effective. If you prefer a quick reheat, you can try a small amount of time in the microwave with a damp paper towel to help retain moisture.
    • TOPPINGS: You can always add your favorite ingredients as substitutes as you please. See blog post for more options!
    • GLUTEN-FREE + OTHER OPTIONS: See FAQ section for all options.
    • SPICES/HERBS: If desired, you can reduce the amounts slightly. Please know that this recipe is bold in spice/herb flavor, so feel free to adjust based on your tastebuds.
