If you’ve ever tried buying tickets to see the Savannah Bananas, you already know how black-box the whole thing feels.
You drop your email into a lottery form, wait months without hearing a peep, and then, if lightning strikes and you actually get selected, you’re buying a general “zone” rather than grabbing Seat 12 in Row 8 off an interactive map.
It feels arbitrary from the outside.
But when I sat down with Steven Wilde, the Bananas’ Head of Ticket Experience, he made it clear that there’s a mountain of data science and consumer psychology running underneath all that yellow-tuxedo showmanship.
Here is how the lottery machine actually operates from start to finish.
1. The lottery isn’t a marketing gimmick
When the Bananas release their tour schedule, millions of people can be competing for the opportunity to purchase tickets.
And despite what skeptical fans might think, Wilde insists “lottery” isn’t just a marketing buzzword used to manufacture fake hype.
Wilde said demand can outstrip stadium supply by roughly 20-to-1 in many cities.
The draw itself, he said, is completely random, handled by a computer algorithm without any human finger on the scale.
“There’s nothing where we’re putting our thumb on anything to kind of influence who is selected,” Wilde said.
To keep the system fair, Wilde said the organization uses third-party verification tools to scrub the entry lists.
The software scans for duplicate accounts, burner emails and commercial bot networks attempting to game the system.
If a ticket scalper tries setting up dozens of fake profiles to improve the odds, the screening tools are designed to flag them before the draw happens.
2. The overbooking math: Why some winners don’t buy
Winning a lottery slot doesn’t guarantee a sale.
Life gets in the way.
People miss the notification email, realize they can’t purchase the number of tickets they expected or simply change their plans.
Because of that drop-off, Wilde’s team has to think a lot like an airline managing flight inventory.
They track conversion metrics closely.
They know what percentage of lottery winners actually complete a purchase and how many seats the average buyer takes per transaction.
So while the selection of who gets an opportunity to buy is pure chance, the calculation of how many purchasing opportunities get sent out is mathematical.
The goal is simple:
Fill the stadium without creating more purchasing opportunities than the available inventory can support.
3. “Choices are a tax”
When you get access to buy, you don’t necessarily stare at a massive 3D seating chart with dozens of differently priced rows.
At many Banana Ball events, you instead select a ticket zone, such as a lower-bowl area or outfield section.
That isn’t simply a technical limitation.
It’s a deliberate design choice.
As Wilde puts it:
“Choices are a tax.”
The logic is simple.
Staring at thousands of individual open seats can cause decision paralysis.
People sit there wondering whether Row 12 is noticeably better than Row 15 or whether a slightly different section is worth another few minutes of consideration.
By stripping away those micro-decisions and offering broader ticket zones, the purchasing process can move considerably faster.
The specific seat assignments can then be made closer to game day, with the system working to keep the tickets in a purchase together.
4. Staggered drops and custom code
Instead of throwing tens of thousands of eager fans into the purchasing process simultaneously, the Bananas release purchasing opportunities in staggered waves.
One group might receive access during one window, followed by another group later.
That helps the organization manage both ticket inventory and the technology handling the sale.
Crucially, the Bananas run this through Fans First Tickets, their own ticketing platform.
The platform grew out of the organization’s dissatisfaction with the limitations of traditional ticketing.
As the Bananas expanded, they wanted greater control over things such as fees, ticket distribution, fan experience and eventually resale.
The organization ultimately acquired the ticketing company it had been using and continued developing the platform as Fans First Tickets.
Wilde considers that in-house platform part of the organization’s “secret sauce.”
The logic fits the larger Fans First philosophy.
If a server struggles or a ticket doesn’t scan correctly, there isn’t another ticketing company to blame.
The Bananas control the technology.
Which means they also own the problem.
And for an organization obsessed with fan experience, that’s exactly how they want it.
