    FAQs & Tips

    What are scalloped potatoes?

Scalloped potatoes are a classic American comfort food dish made with thinly sliced potatoes layered in a creamy sauce. Usually baked, this is a slow cooer version.

Is this the same thing as au gratin potatoes?

Similar but no. The main difference is scalloped potatoes are made with a cream-based sauce while au gratin potatoes includes more cheese layered throughout the dish.

Can you use a different potato?

Russet potatoes are work best because they soften well and help naturally thicken the sauce. Having said that, yes, you can technically use a different potato. If you do, I suggest a waxy potato like red or yellow. They will give the recipe a slightly creamier texture though.

Do you need to pre-cook the potatoes?

Nope. Since the potatoes are sliced thin, they will cook perfectly in the slow cooker from raw.

Do you need to peel the potatoes?

Nope! You do not have to peel the potatoes. Slice them with the skin on.

How do you slice the potatoes?

I use a sharp knife. You can also use a mandoline slicer. Try to slice the potatoes in the same uniform in thickness so they cook evenly. If your slices are too thick, they may undercook but  if they are too thin, they can overcook and turn to mush.

Do you need to add the ham?

You do not. Feel free to make this meatless but omitting the ham. Or you can omit the ham and add a different meat like cooked bacon.

What if my sauce is thin?

The sauce thickens as it rests. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes after cooking. You can also reduce excess liquid by uncovering the lid as it cooks for a bit longer.

Can you make this ahead of time?

Yes. Assemble the slow cooker scalloped potatoes ahead and refrigerate. Cook when ready, but within a day.

How will you know this is done?

You will know this scalloped potato dish is done when the potatoes are tender and the sauce is bubbling.

    How do you store leftovers?

Store leftover crockpot scalloped potatoes & ham in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

What size slow cooker did you use?

I use a  6-quart slow cooker for this recipe.
