Style Spotlight: Looks, Trends & Fashion Inspiration

    Key takeaways
    • Elevated casual: Opt for polished, cozy pieces—think refined sweaters and jeans—for a more put-together Thanksgiving look.
    • Statement sweater: A bold jacquard or embellished knit instantly upgrades a simple long-sleeve top + jeans ensemble.
    • Perfect jeans: Choose high-rise, wide-leg jeans with slight stretch and extra-long inseam for flattering, comfortable holiday wear.
    • Layering: Style sweaters over a crisp white shirt or add jackets (shearling, faux fur) for texture and warmth.
    • Shoes & proportions: Low-heeled boots that barely show under wide-leg jeans create an elegant, elongated silhouette.

THANKSGIVING OUTFIT IDEAS BY MERRITT BECK // DRIES VAN NOTEN JACQUARD BIB SWEATER

I can’t believe it, but tomorrow I’m flying back to Austin for Thanksgiving! It came on so fast this year. This is the last year I’m splitting my time, so to avoid paying New York taxes for 2025 I need to spend a few more weeks back in Texas. I’ll be in Austin for two weeks in November and two weeks in December, then will start of 2026 as a full time New York resident! It works out well, because my nephew’s birthday is later this week and I wanted to fly back early for that anyway. I have a couple of extra days, so I’m going to take a quick trip up to Dallas to see some friends at the end of the week, and then will have a relaxing holiday with the fam next week!

Our Thanksgiving plans are pretty much the same every year – everyone convenes at my mom and stepdad’s house for a mid-afternoon feast (usually prepared by my mom and myself), followed by a lounge session by the fire to watch football. After a chaotic couple of weeks with my move, I’m definitely looking forward to a little down time! Even though Thanksgiving is one of the more casual, cozy holidays, we still enjoy a more polished dress code at my house. It typically doesn’t get cold enough to bundle up in Austin, but I do like to lean into fall vibes if possible! This year I’m going to make a game time decision between the outfit you see above, and the one I shared at the end of this video – if it’s a warmer day, the blouse may be a more comfortable option. Either way, I’ll definitely be wearing these jeans! They have a little bit of stretch, making them the ideal style to don for a big meal.

I picked up this bib sweater while my mom was in town in October! We were doing a bit of shopping in SoHo and saw that Dries Van Noten had opened a new boutique across from Khaite. We didn’t have much time because of a lunch reservation, but I wanted to just pop in and see the space – it’s a fabulous layout, and thanks to the designer’s penchant for dazzling prints, fabrics and embellishments, it’s a boutique to behold. While quickly thumbing through the racks, I stumbled upon this eye-catching jacquard sweater and was immediately taken with the rich colors and interesting silhouette. I paused at the price, but my mom encouraged me to try it on and I couldn’t resist! I slipped it over my head and the rest is history. It’s such a unique piece that takes any long sleeve top + jeans to a whole new level! I particularly love how it looks styled over a white shirt as I’ve done here. It’s cozy, but feels crisp and polished. There are hints of soft blue in the jacquard pattern, making it a useful piece for winter-to-spring wear as well! It’s such a stunner. In terms of sizing, I sized up to a medium!

Back to these jeans though… I actually tried them on in-store in white earlier this summer and didn’t love them. If I recall, the denim fabric felt thinner and stretchier on the white pair. In the Lansing wash I’m wearing here, the denim feels more sturdy and supportive, while still offering a comfortable hint of stretch. The fit is a dream! I’ve been wearing these jeans on repeat over the last few weeks, and am now tempted to order them in the Carlyle and Benson washes as well – the high rise cut combined with the extra long inseam is unbelievably flattering for wide-leg look. I especially love how they barely skim the floor when I wear my favorite low-heeled boots.

Keep scrolling for some additional outfit inspo for a chic Thanksgiving holiday!
