Nearly a decade after his NFL career came to an abrupt end, Colin Kaepernick has demonstrated that success isn’t always measured by wins on the football field.
The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, whose decision to kneel during the national anthem in 2016 to protest racial injustice and police brutality ignited one of the most polarizing debates in sports history, has transformed himself from an unemployed athlete into a businessman, media executive and technology entrepreneur with an estimated net worth of about $20 million.
Kaepernick last played in the NFL during the 2016 season after leading the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance and an NFC Championship earlier in his career. Despite multiple public attempts to return to the league, no team signed him after he became a free agent. In 2017, he filed a grievance accusing NFL owners of colluding to keep him out of the league because of his protests. The case was settled confidentially in 2019, with the financial terms never officially disclosed.
Rather than allowing the end of his football career to define him, Kaepernick began building businesses around his own brand and vision.
His newest venture, Lumi Story AI, is an artificial intelligence platform designed to help creators develop, publish and monetize comics, graphic novels and other storytelling projects. During his six NFL seasons, Kaepernick earned more than $43 million in salary and bonuses. While many athletes struggle financially after their playing careers end, Kaepernick has used those earnings as a foundation to create multiple streams of income outside of professional sports.
