    Key takeaways
    • Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor will hire a preservation director for two years to create infrastructure preserving cultural heritage and lands.
    • The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor spans from Florida to North Carolina, covering about 12,000 miles and recognizing unique Gullah Geechee culture.
    • Congress designated the area a National Heritage Area in 2006 to recognize and protect Gullah Geechee heritage.
    • The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor encompasses 437 distinct coastal communities across four states.
    • African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the largest U.S. resource for African American sites.

Officials with the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor announced Tuesday that the organization had recently received $150,000 in funding from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.

The money will be used to support the organization’s hiring of a preservation director for a two-year term.

“The Director will be instrumental in creating the infrastructure needed to preserve The Corridor’s cultural heritage and lands,” according to the announcement.

The corridor, which stretches from Florida up the East Coast to North Carolina, is one of 27 sites granted $3 million in funding to advance ongoing preservation activities for historic sites, buildings, and landscapes that represent African American cultural heritage.

Congress established the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor as a National Heritage Area in 2006. The corridor includes 12,000 miles of area recognizing the unique culture of the Gullah Geechee, descendants of West and Central Africans who were enslaved and brought to the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida to work on coastal rice, cotton, and indigo plantations.

The corridor includes 437 distinct coastal communities in the four states.

The African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the largest U.S. resource dedicated to the preservation of African American historic places.
