Savannah State University announces a $346,000 estate gift from Gwen-Dolyn Cutter, a 1968 graduate whose longstanding commitment to the institution will continue through support for Athletics and the John Lewis School of Public Policy and Social Sciences. The gift designates $173,000 to each area.

Cutter, who passed away on February 26, 2025, remained an engaged alumna and supporter of Savannah State throughout her lifetime. Her planned gift continues that commitment by investing in the University’s students and programs.

“Ms. Cutter’s legacy reflects the enduring bond between Savannah State University and its alumni,” said Dr. Jermaine Whirl, president of Savannah State University. “Her investment in Athletics and the John Lewis School of Public Policy and Social Sciences will support students as they develop their talents, pursue their education and prepare to serve their communities. We are grateful for her commitment to Savannah State and honored to carry her legacy forward.”

A native of Screven County, Georgia, Cutter earned her degree from Savannah State in 1968. During her undergraduate years, she served as editor of the Tiger Yearbook and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Following graduation, Cutter pursued a career with the State of Georgia, where she served until her retirement. She maintained her connection to Savannah State through active involvement with the Savannah State University National Alumni Association and membership in the President’s Club.

The funds designated for Athletics will support student-athletes and university athletic programs.
The allocation to the John Lewis School of Public Policy and Social Sciences will advance educational opportunities for students preparing for careers and leadership in public service, policy, government and community engagement.

“Ms. Cutter’s generosity is a powerful expression of her belief in Savannah State University and the generations of students who will follow in her footsteps. Through this planned gift, she has created a legacy that will extend far beyond her lifetime and provide opportunities for students for years to come. We are deeply grateful that Ms. Cutter chose Savannah State as part of her lasting legacy. Her generosity reminds us that philanthropy is not simply about what we give today—it is about the impact we choose to leave for tomorrow,” said Adrian Scott, vice president of University Advancement.

Cutter’s estate gift demonstrates the enduring value of planned giving in advancing the University’s mission. Such gifts allow alumni and supporters to establish a lasting philanthropic legacy while contributing to opportunities for future generations of students.

Savannah State University honors Cutter’s life, service and generosity and extends its appreciation to her family and loved ones. Her contributions as a student leader, engaged alumna and benefactor will remain an enduring part of the University’s legacy.
