    Key takeaways
    • Raw cacao powder from Theobroma cacao retains flavanols and minerals, offering deep chocolate flavor and antioxidant benefits.
    • Frozen banana gives thick, frosty creaminess and natural sweetness for a milkshake-like texture.
    • Soy milk gives the creamiest, most protein-rich non-dairy result; almond or oat milk make it thinner.
    • Prep freezer smoothie packs or freeze leftovers as popsicles or ice cubes for quick blending later.
    • Customize: add two shots of espresso, seeds or protein powder, or swap nut butter for sunflower seed butter.

This healthy Chocolate Smoothie tastes like a classic milkshake, but it’s anti-inflammatory rich in antioxidants, potassium, and 13 grams of protein, and it’s refined sugar-free. Just 5 ingredients, 5 minutes, and cleanup is a breeze!

Why You’ll Love This Chocolate Banana Smoothie Recipe

    • Tastes like dessert. Creamy frozen bananas, rich cacao powder, and caramelly-sweet dates blend into something that tastes more like a milkshake than a health food.
    • Just 5 wholesome ingredients, blended in about 5 minutes with easy cleanup. Triple win!
    • Superfood benefits. Loaded with antioxidants from the cacao (and omega-3s from the walnuts, if you use them), each sip works for you while tasting like a treat.
    • Rich in plant protein and potassium. With 13g of protein and over 1,000mg of potassium, this smoothie is one of my favorite post-workout snacks.
    • Endlessly adaptable. Whether you add protein, blend in a few shots of espresso, turn it into a smoothie bowl, or make it nut-free, this recipe can do it all.

A refuel after playing tennis or doing yoga is a must, and this healthy cocoa smoothie is my go-to! Just as often, I add a few shots of espresso and call it my on-the-go coffee and breakfast in one on busy mornings.

It’s so versatile because it tastes like a treat while being a secret nutrition superhero. Frozen banana makes it thick and frosty, raw cacao powder brings deep chocolate flavor, almond butter makes it rich and nutty, and dates provide caramelly sweetness. But it’s doing real work: 13 grams of plant-based protein, over 1,000 milligrams of potassium, and a big dose of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds from the cacao.

If you’re looking for a smoothie that doesn’t taste like compromise, this is the one.

    What is Cacao Powder?

Cacao powder comes from the beans of the Theobroma cacao tree — the same tree and bean that gives us cocoa powder — but it’s processed differently. The beans are fermented, dried, and cold-pressed to remove the cocoa butter, then milled into a fine, dark powder.

Skipping the roasting and alkali treatment that conventional cocoa goes through means cacao holds onto more of its natural flavanols (plant compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that support healthy blood flow) along with minerals like magnesium, iron, and zinc (source). Thanks to cacao, this smoothie tastes like a chocolate milkshake but works like a health food.

    Key Ingredients

Cacao smoothie ingredients on a counter.Cacao smoothie ingredients on a counter.

Frozen Banana: An overripe frozen banana adds potassium and fiber, plus sweetness and an incredibly creamy, frosty consistency. Peel, chop, and freeze your bananas when they’re spotty for the best flavor.

Cacao Powder: Gives this chocolate smoothie recipe a deep flavor that tastes like dessert while delivering antioxidants (more on that above). Find raw cacao powder at Trader Joe’s, online, or at Whole Foods or Sprouts.

Medjool Date: Adds extra sweetness and a caramel note that plays off the rich chocolate. Pit it before blending. If your date is dried out or stiff, soak it in hot water for up to 30 minutes first.

Soy Milk: Delivers protein and makes the smoothie full-bodied and creamy. Almond, oat, cashew, or your favorite non-dairy milk will work too.

Almond Butter: For a light nuttiness and dessert-like indulgence. Use peanut butter for a chocolate peanut butter smoothie, or sunflower seed butter or tahini to keep it nut-free. Or use 1/4 cup of raw walnuts for anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Recipe Variations

Looking to make this cacao smoothie recipe your own? Try any of these twists:

    • Top with Nibs. Cacao nibs are chopped pieces of the cacao bean. Sprinkle some on top of the smoothie for added crunch and antioxidants.
    • Add Seeds: A tablespoon of hemp hearts or chia seeds adds plant-based protein and healthy fats.
    • Swap In Frozen Fruit: Replace up to ½ cup of the banana with frozen raspberries or strawberries for a chocolate-berry vibe.
    • Mocha-Licious: Blend in 2 shots of freshly pulled espresso to deepen the flavor and make a healthy mocha smoothie.
    • Walnuts for Omega-3s: Use walnuts instead of nut butter for an anti-inflammatory super boost (be sure to use a high-speed blender so it isn’t gritty).
    • Smoothie Bowl: Reduce the milk to ½ cup and increase the frozen banana to 1½ cups. Blend until smooth and thick, adding more banana to thicken or a few tablespoons of milk to thin, if needed.
    • Make It Nut-Free: Use sunflower seed butter or even tahini in place of the nut butter for an allergen-friendly sipper.
    • Pump Up the Protein: Blend according to the directions, then blitz in a scoop of plant-based vanilla or chocolate protein powder just until combined.
    • Glorious Greens: A handful of baby spinach or kale adds extra nutrition without overpowering the chocolate. Promise, you won’t even taste it!

    Jenné’s Recipe Tips

    • Add the milk first. Pouring the liquid in before the frozen banana gives the blades something to catch, so everything pulls down into the blender instead of spinning above it and/or burning out the motor.
    • Choose soy milk for a creamy, high-protein smoothie. Almond and oat milk also work well; the smoothie will just be thinner and lower in protein.
    • Keep a stash of frozen bananas. Cut ripe bananas into cubes and spread them on a parchment-lined tray to freeze — the fastest method, and the cubes won’t clump together. Once they’re solid, transfer them to a freezer bag. Do this at least 2 hours ahead, or top up your stash whenever a bunch starts to go spotty.
    • Adjust the sweetness to taste. Overripe frozen bananas bring plenty of sweetness on their own, but blend in an extra date if you want more.
    • Start small with the cacao powder and nut butter. Blend in one tablespoon each, then taste. You can always add more, but you can’t remove it once it’s blended in.
    • Extra thick. For a thicker consistency, use as little as 1/2 cup of vegan milk or add more frozen banana.

    Make Ahead Directions

Meal prep smoothie packs at the beginning of the month to make mornings even easier. Portion the frozen banana, date, and cacao powder into freezer-safe bags or containers and store them in the freezer. When you’re ready, add the milk and almond butter to the blender, dump in a pack, and blend.

    Serving Suggestions

Blend one up any day of the week—this smoothie with cacao powder makes a fantastic liquid breakfast, post-workout shake, or anytime snack. Or pair it with one of these hand-held sides when you want a heartier meal.

    Storage Directions

Enjoy this smoothie fresh, when it’s at its thickest and creamiest. But if you have leftovers, don’t pour them down the drain.

Pour the extra into a popsicle mold for handheld snacking, or into an ice cube tray. Freeze for 3–4 hours, or until solid, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container.

When you’re ready for a second round, blend the cubes with a splash of milk until smooth.

    Chocolate Smoothie Recipe FAQs

Can I use a fresh banana instead of frozen?

You can, but the smoothie won’t be nearly as thick or frosty. Frozen banana is what gives it its milkshake texture. If you don’t have frozen banana, reduce the milk to 1/2 cup and add 1 cup of ice.

    Is this smoothie kid-friendly?

Very. In fact, my daughter requests it by name! It’s a hit for both of us because it tastes like a chocolate milkshake, and it’s sweetened entirely with fruit — no refined sugar anywhere.

    Does this smoothie have caffeine?

A little. Cacao naturally contains a small amount — roughly a tenth of what’s in a cup of coffee — along with theobromine, a gentler stimulant. It’s not enough to keep most people up, but worth knowing if you’re sensitive or making it for kids later in the day.

Can I make it without a high-speed blender?

Yes, as long as you’re using nut butter rather than whole walnuts. Walnuts need a high-speed blender to break down fully, or the smoothie can end up gritty.

    Can I make it ahead?

Yes, in two ways. Portion the frozen banana, date, and cacao powder into freezer-safe smoothie packs, then add the milk and nut butter when you blend (see the meal prep section above). Or if you have leftover smoothie, freeze it in popsicle molds or ice cube trays for later.

Prevent your screen from going dark

    • Add the ingredients to the blender in the order listed, starting with 1 tablespoon each of cacao powder and nut butter.

    • Blend until smooth and creamy.

    • Taste and blend in more cacao powder or nut butter as needed. Enjoy!

    • Milk matters. Soy milk gives the creamiest result and the most protein. Almond or oat milk works too — the smoothie will just have less protein and be a little thinner.
    • Keep frozen bananas on hand. Cut ripe bananas into cubes and spread them on a parchment-lined tray to freeze — it’s the fastest method, and the cubes won’t clump. Transfer to a freezer bag once solid so this smoothie is always five minutes away.
    • Cacao or cocoa powder? Either works, but raw cacao is more bitter and fruity and provides more natural antioxidants (flavanols). Dutch-process cocoa is mellower and darker, but loses some of its flavanols during the alkali treatment.
    • Make it a smoothie bowl. Reduce the milk to ½ cup and increase the banana to 1½ cups for a thick, spoonable base.
    • Adding protein powder? Blend the smoothie as directed, then blitz in the powder right before serving. A quick pulse at the end keeps the texture smooth and thick.
    • Best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers don’t have to go to waste. Pour them into popsicle molds for hand-held snacks, or freeze in ice cube trays and blend the cubes with a splash of milk.
    • Adjusting the sweetness. Blend in an extra date along with the cacao powder and nut butter. Ripe, freckled bananas make the smoothie sweeter on their own, so you may not need it.
