  • Land cleared near Grayson Stadium for a multi-million dollar building paid for by Savannah Bananas but built on public land; they did not pay for land.
  • Whether Savannah Bananas will pay property tax on the building is unclear.
  • In 2024 the City Council agreed to spend $3 million on stadium improvements; the contract contains no penalty if Savannah Bananas relocate.

March 12, 2026 – The Savannah City Council will be asked to approve an expenditure to address the loss of storage space for equipment used in Daffin Park by both the Park & Tree and Recreation departments.

In August 2025, the Council gave the Savannah Bananas company access to all of the storage space used for decades until the large bleachers section of the historic stadium, as part of a revised five-year agreement.

Equipment such as portable bleachers, soccer nets and maintenance equipment have been displaced, and new facilities must be built to serve the needs of both departments.

The Council will review the City Manager’s request for additional funding from the City’s cash reserves, needed to build a prefabricated storage building which will be built on the eastern end of Daffin Park.  The money planned in the 2026 budget for what would be needed is insufficient.

Specifically, “Project PB0250-Grayson Storage Relocation” will be funded by the General Fund ($235k) which has a remaining balance of $235,000 as of 02.03.2026 designated for the project in the budget.  But $95,191 will be taken from the Capital Reserves account, if approved, for a project total of $330,191.

Land is currently being cleared on the south city of Grayson Stadium to build a multi-million dollar building – paid for by the Bananas – but built on public land. The Bananas did not pay to acquire the land.

Whether they will pay any property tax on the building itself is not clear.

In 2024, the City Council also agreed to spend $3 million for improvements to the stadium, including lighting and artificial turf.

The contract has no penalty if the Bananas decide to move the team to another city.

Editor’s Note:  The SBJ is working to get clarity on this issue.
