The Caribbean is celebrating one of its greatest musical icons as legendary calypsonian The Mighty Sparrow marked his 91st birthday, receiving an outpouring of tributes from fans, fellow entertainers and cultural leaders across the region.

Born Slinger Francisco on July 9, 1935, the Grenada-born, Trinidad-raised performer has spent more than seven decades shaping the sound and identity of calypso. Widely revered as the “Calypso King of the World,” Sparrow’s music has combined humour, storytelling and sharp social commentary, earning him an enduring place in Caribbean history.

Speaking from New York, where he now resides, Sparrow said he was in good spirits as family members planned a quiet celebration for the occasion. Reflecting on reaching another milestone, the veteran entertainer simply remarked that he was “feeling good” and remained ready for whatever the future holds.

Throughout his remarkable career, Sparrow captured eight Road March titles, eight Calypso Monarch crowns and two Calypso King of Kings championships. His catalogue includes timeless classics such as Jean and Dinah, Ten to One Is Murder, Mr. Walker and Doh Back Back, songs that continue to resonate with audiences decades after their release.

As news of his birthday spread, social media was flooded with messages celebrating his extraordinary contribution to Caribbean music and culture. Admirers praised Sparrow not only for his unmatched artistry but also for using calypso as a platform to chronicle the region’s social, political and cultural evolution, cementing his legacy as one of the Caribbean’s most influential musical pioneers
