Obituary for Mother Ora Lee Oliver
“In my Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you.” – John 14:2-6
With profound love and deep respect, we celebrate the life and legacy of Mother Ora Lee Oliver,
a devoted woman of faith, family, and service. Born on May 8, 1935, in Girard, Georgia, to the
late Bugie and Anna Johnson Oliver, she peacefully transitioned to her eternal home on May 14,
2025.
Ora Lee received her early education through the Screven County High School System. At a
young age, she professed her love for Christ and became a member of Dalton Baptist Church in
Sylvania, Georgia. Her spiritual journey led her to Savannah, Georgia, where she joined Holy
Zion Church under the leadership of Elder Wilder, fully committing her life to Christ as her
Savior and Lord.
On August 2, 1955, she was united in holy matrimony to Hershel Sweeny, with whom she
shared many cherished years. She found great joy in her favorite pastimes: shopping and
cooking for her family, always making sure her loved ones were cared for and well-fed.
Mother Oliver later became a dedicated member of East Savannah Church of Christ Holiness
Unto the Lord, under the leadership of Pastor Freeman Jenkins, where she faithfully served until
her health no longer allowed.
A lover of scripture, her favorite passage was John 14:2-6, which gave her comfort and
assurance that her place was prepared in the Lord’s house. Her life’s desire was simple yet
profound: to live a life that pleased God.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and all her siblings.
Her memory and legacy
live on in the hearts of her brother-in-law: Willie Walker; her godson: Isaiah Cooper; her
goddaughter: Tess Brice; her dear friend: Vernice Rackett; and, a host of nieces, nephews, and
friends.
