A fossilized skull fragment of Homo sp. discovered in central Spain provides paleoanthropologists a fresh home window into the tale of old people that stayed in Europe thousands of countless years back.

The fossil is a fragment of a parietal bone — among the bones that develop the sides and top of the head.
The specimen was located embedded in rock breccia during excavations at the Center Pleistocene region of Ruidera within the Ruidera Lakes Natural Park in the Castilla-La Mancha region.
Labeled RVH- 1, it represents the first human fossil ever recouped from the website.
“It was an amazing and fortunate shock,” claimed Dr. Mario Modesto-Mata, a paleoanthropologist at the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH) and the International College of La Rioja.
“We went through a variety of emotions, from preliminary apprehension and shock to immense joy once it was confirmed that it can only be human.”
Making use of a combination of uranium-series dating and optically promoted luminescence, the researchers approximated the fossil-bearing layer to be up to 224, 000 years old.
“This fossil is just the pointer of the iceberg,” included Dr. Sara Díaz Pérez, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Wrocław.
“Ruidera still has much to reveal about human evolution in Europe, and we are convinced that it will certainly continue to generate explorations of major scientific relevance.”
Anatomically, RVH- 1 sticks out for its relative density and its noticable angle at the temporal line, a ridge on the side of the skull.
Both dimensions place the fossil toward the top end of the range seen in other Middle Pleistocene human fossils from Europe.
“This is a thick cranial structure, comparable to the morphology seen in various other crania also considered as antiquated, such as the Ceprano specimen in Italy and the fossils from Caune de l’Arago in the French Pyrenees,” claimed Dr. Daniel García Martínez, a paleoanthropologist at the Complutense University of Madrid.
“The unusual makeup of RVH- 1 indicates that hominin populations– the group of primates that consists of modern people and their closest fossil loved ones– with unexpected characteristics were still residing in the Iberian Peninsula during that time.”
“These attributes had been acquired from ancestral lineages and lingered until fairly late in the Middle Pleistocene.”
The scientists warn versus drawing sweeping final thoughts from a solitary, partial bone.
Instead of appointing the sampling to a details species, they chose to categorize it simply as Homo sp., while noting its morphological resemblances to what is often labeled Homo heidelbergensis
