Savannah Bananas star Jackson Olson knows his mega-popular baseball team isn’t for everybody – but he’s got a solution for that.
“If you’re a random baseball fan that stumbles upon the Savannah Bananas, there’s a 95 percent chance that when you first see it, you’re gonna be like, ‘This is the dumbest thing I’ve seen in my entire life,’” Olson, 28, exclusively told Us via his partnership with Supercuts. “But that percentage decreases so much if you watch a game on TV. You’re like, ‘Oh, that’s a cool trick play.’ Then you go to a game in person and you’re like, ‘Wow, the entertainment is amazing.’”
He added, “When they first recognize it, I understand there’s going to be hate. There’s going to be people that are like, ‘This is a clown show, this is the circus.’ Whatever. But as they see it and see what we’re actually doing; we’re not trying to change baseball, we’re just trying to make baseball more fun. There’s a big difference there.”
Olson urged any Bananas skeptic to “come to a game and watch it.”
“If you still don’t like it, so be it,” he said. “Who cares? But just see it.”
Olson has become the Savannah Bananas’ undeniable breakout star, amassing over 2 million followers on TikTok and being announced as one of the first celebrities to compete on the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars, which premieres next month.
Amid his rising fame and increasingly packed schedule, Olson reflected on a recent moment that cemented just how influential he’s become.
“I got a call from someone in my hometown [of New Milford, Connecticut] and they told me they wanted to name the Little League field after me,” Olson told Us. “They wanted to name the Little League field that I had played on since I was 6 years old Jackson Olson Field. That was the coolest thing to hear, but it didn’t really click until I got to the field and I saw the sign and I saw that it was up. That was the moment I actually sat back and said, ‘This is the coolest thing ever.’”
He added, “It almost felt like a thing where they were going to put it up for a day and take it down. It felt like a brand deal. But I’m like, ‘Wait no, this is going to be there forever.’ Unless I do something bad, which I hope I don’t.”
In another “pinch me” moment for Olson, he has partnered with Supercuts on “The Jax,” his signature haircut that kids can now request during back-to-school season.
“My hair has become, kind of, a part of my personality, and when kids dress up as me for Halloween, they’ll get their hair dyed and they’ll cut their hair to try to look like mine,” Olson explained of his ‘do, which is a voluminous textured crop with a forward flow and frosted tips. “It always looked a little bit like mine, but it was never my haircut.”
