Savannah Steel head coach Coretta Brown steps away for remainder of season
Brown previously took a leave of absence from the team to attend to a personal family matter.
SAVANNAH, Ga. —
Savannah Steel inaugural head coach and general manager Coretta Brown announced Friday that she is stepping away from the organization for the remainder of the season.
Brown shared the news in a post on Instagram. It reads, in part, “After careful consideration, I have decided not to return to the sideline for the remainder of the season. While this was a difficult decision, it is the right one for me and my family at this time.”
Her announcement comes several weeks after the Steel said she was taking a leave of absence to attend to a personal family matter.
Assistant coach Toccara Ross has served as interim head coach since Brown began her leave. The organization has not announced whether Ross will continue in that role for the rest of the season or who will assume Brown’s general manager responsibilities.
When Brown’s leave was initially announced, the Steel said the organization and the UPSHOT League fully supported her and asked that her privacy be respected. The team also thanked its fans, partners and the Savannah community for their understanding and continued support.
Brown, a Southeast Georgia native and former University of North Carolina standout, was selected to lead the Steel during the professional women’s basketball team’s inaugural season.
