The Savannah Steel opened an eight-game road stretch with a 73-57 loss to the Jacksonville Waves on Friday night.
Jacksonville scored the game’s first 10 points and built an early advantage. Olivia Cochran ended Savannah’s scoring drought with a baseline fadeaway jumper, but the Waves used second-chance opportunities to take a 23-5 lead after the first quarter.
The Steel found more offense during the second period. Newcomer Ja’Leah Williams, playing in her second UPSHOT League game, made consecutive baskets off the bench late in the half. Jacksonville carried a 39-21 lead into halftime.
The Waves maintained control during the second half and entered the fourth quarter ahead 55-36. Savannah continued cutting into the deficit but could not complete the comeback.
Que Morrison led the Steel with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Williams finished with nine points, four rebounds and two assists.
The loss was Savannah’s ninth consecutive defeat against Jacksonville this season.
The Steel will continue their road trip against the Charlotte Crown Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
