Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights

    Key takeaways
    • Coretta Brown said Zee Spearman is improving physically, showing hunger and drive that will fuel future performances.
    • Zee Spearman credited the full roster, saying the bench stayed ready and matched the team’s intensity.
    • Savannah Steel held Greensboro Groove to 12 third-quarter points and 25 percent shooting, shifting momentum.
    • Lasha Petree scored 19 points and made clutch steals that led to second-half transition baskets.
    • The win snapped a five-game losing skid and starts a four-game series stretch, next meeting Friday 7pm at Enmarket Arena.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The Savannah Steel (5-8) are back in the win column with a 90-74 home win on Wednesday over the Greensboro Groove.

Steel Forward, Zee Spearman spearheaded a demolition of a performance by the Savannah bench, outscoring the Groove 52-8. Spearman had 19 points and nine rebounds in the win.

“I think she’s starting to figure out the physicality,” said Head Coach Coretta Brown. “She’s getting better every single day. That hunger and that drive is there and I think the more she figures it out and has games like this, the hungrier she’s going to get.”

“We have a whole roster,” said Zee. “The bench is always ready and we just have to go in the game and match the same intensity and I feel like we did a great job of that today.”

The Steel found themselves only up by two at the half but shut down the Groove especially in the third quarter, holding them to 12 points off 25% shooting.

Lasha Petree was also a factor as she too ended with 19 points including some clutch steals leading to transition buckets in the second half.

That win snapped a five-game losing skid dating back to May 30th.

The Steel and the Groove will play each other four more times over the next week and a half including their next matchup on Friday at 7pm from Enmarket Arena.
