Mattel Honors Serena Williams With a New Signature Barbie Inspired by Her 2005 Australian Open Championship and Her Legacy of Breaking Barriers
Tennis legend Serena Williams is being celebrated with a new Barbie Signature doll honoring one of the defining victories of her career, bringing her championship legacy to a new generation of young girls.
Mattel unveiled the collectible doll ahead of International Day of the Girl, recreating the outfit Williams wore during her 2005 Australian Open championship victory over Lindsay Davenport.
The release marks Williams’ second Barbie collaboration in 2026 and officially welcomes the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion to Team Barbie, a group of influential athletes and role models recognized for inspiring young girls to pursue their ambitions.
“As we celebrate International Day of the Girl, Barbie is proud to honor Serena Williams,” said Nathan Baynard, vice president and head of Barbie at Mattel.
“Serena Williams embodies that message through her extraordinary achievements as an athlete, entrepreneur, and advocate for equality. By honoring her with a Barbie Signature doll, we’re celebrating a barrier-breaking icon whose legacy empowers fans everywhere to dream big and embrace their own potential.”
Serena Williams’ Barbie Recreates Her 2005 Championship Look
According to PEOPLE, the new doll features Williams in a green-and-white tennis ensemble inspired by her memorable Australian Open appearance more than two decades ago.
The outfit includes a cutout top with mesh detailing, a white skirt, matching headband and statement earrings. A tennis racket and ball complete the look.
Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport in the 2005 Australian Open women’s singles final, capturing her second Australian Open singles title and seventh Grand Slam singles championship.
The victory remains one of the defining moments of her career, which would eventually include 23 Grand Slam singles titles, four Olympic gold medals and a lasting influence on women’s sports.
The Signature doll follows a separate, one-of-a-kind Barbie created in Williams’ likeness in March 2026. That earlier tribute was part of Barbie’s global Dream Team initiative, which celebrated eight women recognized for breaking barriers and achieving historic firsts in their respective fields.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Girls
Beyond the championship tribute, Williams said the doll represents something more personal: giving young girls, particularly Black girls, the opportunity to see themselves reflected in figures associated with achievement and possibility.
“Growing up, I didn’t see many girls who looked like me being told there was no limit to who they could become. I want every girl who plays with this doll to see possibility—not just in me, but in herself,” Williams said.
“She can dream big, work hard, change direction, break barriers, and become anything she chooses. That’s what makes having my own Barbie so meaningful to me.”
