SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Savannah Steel are halfway through their inaugural season in the Upshot League, and roster turnover could explain the team’s last-place 7-13 record in the four-team league.
The most notable names absent from the opening night roster include Harmoni Turner and Megan McConnell, along with Sydney Shaw, Ariel Colón and Kharyssa Richardson.

Savannah released Turner on July 5 due to medical reasons, according to the Upshot League website.
McConnell, Shaw, Colón and Richardson were waived by the team, according to the league website.
On July 10, the Steel released guard Dyaisha Fair, who was not part of the original roster, by player request, also according to the website.
Interim Head Coach Toccara Ross said she understands roster changes come with the territory of a new league, but hopes to continue to build a connection with the team.
“With this league and how it goes, players get called up, players don’t get called up, a little moving around going into August and things like that,” Ross said. “So there’s going to be a little bit of up and down with the roster, I think that’s pretty normal in a league like this because it is a developmental opportunity league.”

“Still working on building that chemistry, and we’re going to keep doing that, especially with players coming in and out with a little bit of injury,” Ross said. “They’re trying to learn each other a little bit more and we’re going to lean into that and get them some rest and we’ll start to see that chemistry blend a little bit better.”
The Steel will be back in action on July 17 as they travel to Jacksonville to face the Waves, the top team in the league.
