Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

    Key takeaways
    • Kenan Thompson makes eating a trip priority, eagerly trying local delicacies to experience different taste buds.
    • He’s adventurous but admits some foods — like insects — are a boundary he won’t easily cross.
    • Thompson overpacks, prefers the window seat, and never skips travel grooming essentials like clippers and cologne.

Longtime star Kenan Thompson loves to invoke his inner adventurous foodie whenever he travels.

The Saturday Night Live (SNL) star recently told Thrillist that one thing he’s going to do on every trip he embarks on is eat. He shared that he makes an effort to be open to trying new culinary delights, uniquely experiencing the “taste buds” of other cultures. However, though he keeps it adventurous and enjoys trying local delicacies, he admits that chomping on insects is where it gets challenging for him.

“One thing I always do in every place is eat, for sure. I try to get as free and open to trying whatever kind of things as possible. I’ve been pretty adventurous. But there’s just certain places that I won’t necessarily do that well in,” Thompson admitted. “Insects and stuff like that, that one’s tougher for me. But as far as most other things, the delicacies have been a large, enjoyable part of traveling.”

“Just seeing different cultures or experiencing different taste buds is kind of wild,” he added.

What Else Is There To Know Kenan Thompson’s Travel Habits And Essentials?

Thompson, 47, was first introduced to many back in the ’90s as a teen star in roles on the hit Nickelodeon shows All That and Kenan and Kel. Since then, throughout his celebrated, more than three-decade-long career, he has been awarded a Primetime Emmy and a Titan of Culture Award at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards. Additionally, he has been on SNL since 2003 and is the weekend staple’s longest-tenured cast member.

Elsewhere in his recent interview, Thompson shared that he’s generally an overpacker who “always” accidentally leaves something behind, even if he “prepped the night before.”

“There’s always one little thing, and it irks me so much when I forget something. So yeah, I tend to overpack,” he explained.

Another tidbit Thompson shared is that he prefers the window seat while flying, though he aims to be “considerate” with the power the seat provides.

He said, “I like window seats. I like being able to control the window, number one. So I might have a little bit of an issue there. I might be a control freak. But I like looking out the window too, you know what I mean? And I’m considerate. There are some inconsiderate window people that will ignore the fact that everybody’s got their windows closed and they’ll just open theirs for the whole flight and keep everybody awake. So I’m not that person. You want me on the window. You do.”

Regarding his travel essentials, the star revealed that his hygiene and grooming staples are must-haves for any trip. He listed his two favorite clippers, fresh undies, Bond No. 9 cologne, Old Spice deodorant, Crest toothpaste, a hairbrush, and curl gel as things he wouldn’t leave home without.
