Politics Today: News, Analysis & Debate Across the Spectrum

Key takeaways
  • President Trump said “we're going to have another 10 coming very shortly,” crediting special envoy Steve Witkoff.
  • Negotiations in Doha involve Israel and Iran-backed Hamas, discussing a U.S.-backed 60-day ceasefire proposal.
  • Hamas still holds roughly 50 hostages from about 250 kidnapped on Oct 7; at least 27 believed dead.
  • One Big Beautiful Bill hailed; President Trump thanked Senate leaders and touted record-breaking legislative pace and votes.
  • GOP will defy midterm history, Trump predicted, insisting the party will continue its “winning streak.”

President Trump dined with his GOP allies at the White House Friday night, celebrating their accomplishments like the passage of the One Big Beautiful as his term closes in on the six-month mark, but also revealing that 10 Hamas hostages may soon be released by the terror group.

Trump made the comment during a dinner with lawmakers at the White House, lauding the efforts of his special envoy Steve Witkoff. Negotiators for Israel and Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists have been taking part in the latest round of ceasefire talks in Doha since July 6, discussing a U.S.-backed proposal for a 60-day ceasefire.

“We got most of the hostages back,” Trump said. “We’re going to have another 10 coming very shortly, and we hope to have that finished quickly.”

He did not provide further details. The deviant sadistic group is still thought to be holding at least 50 of the approximately 250 hostages they kidnapped in the horrific Oct 7, 2023, attack against Israel. However, at least 27 of those are thought to be dead.

Five American hostages have been returned, but two of them were dead, and two still remain in Hamas’ clutches.

50 hostages are still held captive by Hamas in Gaza.

Trump also congratulated his Republican allies and pointed to the successes they have achieved together in such a short time:

The rest of Trump’s address Friday night mostly included praise for Congressional Republicans over their work passing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with the president stating he doesn’t “think anybody’s ever come close to” passing such sweeping legislation with such a small majority.

In particular, Trump thanked by name Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, Republican Policy Committee Chair Shelly Moore-Capito, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham.

If you can believe it, even Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, who is not always a reliable partner for the president, said he enjoyed the evening:

Trump noted that they broke a 35-year-old record to get the OBBB passed into law:

“Nobody’s done so much, so fast. And probably you could say, with so few votes,” Trump praised. “You stayed in session for a marathon ten consecutive weeks, and that’s the longest of any Senate in 15 years. And you held over 400 votes, more than any Senate in 35 years. And they were successful votes. And just a few weeks ago, we had the biggest victory of them all. When you passed the one big beautiful bill.”

He also predicted that despite the fact that history shows that the party that wins the presidential election often fares badly in the midterms, the GOP would defy that paradigm and continue its winning streak. “I don’t understand why they say that when you win the presidency, you always almost automatically lose the midterms, because nobody’s had a more successful period of time than we have,” he said. “Based on that, we should do great.”

RedState will be there to give you coverage if and when the hostages are hopefully released.
