Trinidad and Tobago is mourning the loss of two influential figures whose careers helped take the steelpan from local communities to audiences around the world: pioneering pannist Sterling Betancourt and celebrated musician and arranger Robert “Robbie” Greenidge.
Their contributions represent different but equally important chapters in the development and international growth of Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument. Betancourt was among the pioneers who helped introduce the steelpan to international audiences, while Greenidge later demonstrated its versatility through performances, arrangements and collaborations with major international musicians.
Betancourt was a member of the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO), which travelled to London in 1951 to perform at the Festival of Britain. The appearance marked a significant moment in the history of the steelpan, exposing international audiences to an instrument that had emerged from Trinidad and Tobago’s working-class communities.
Betancourt remained in Britain after the TASPO tour and became an important figure in developing the steelband movement there. He worked alongside other pioneers, including Russell Henderson, helping establish steelpan as part of the cultural landscape in the United Kingdom. His work eventually took him across Europe, Asia and Africa, making him an important ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago’s musical heritage.
Greenidge represented another stage in the instrument’s evolution. A highly regarded pannist and arranger, he became closely associated with the Desperadoes Steel Orchestra and produced arrangements that earned Panorama victories. His musical career also extended well beyond the steelband movement, with collaborations involving internationally recognised performers including Earth, Wind & Fire, John Lennon, Grover Washington Jr. and Ralph MacDonald.
The careers of both men reflect the remarkable transformation of the steelpan. Once associated largely with Carnival and communities on the margins of Trinidad and Tobago society, the instrument gradually gained international recognition and became a defining symbol of the country’s cultural identity.
TASPO’s 1951 journey to Britain was particularly important in that transformation. The ensemble became the first steelband from Trinidad and Tobago to travel internationally, helping demonstrate that an instrument created from discarded oil drums could command attention on a global stage.
The steelpan has since developed into an internationally recognised instrument and remains central to Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural identity. The United Nations also recognised its importance by proclaiming August 11 as World Steelpan Day in 2023.
The legacies of Betancourt and Greenidge therefore extend beyond their individual performances. Their work helped establish the steelpan as a serious musical instrument, a source of national pride and an important cultural export from Trinidad and Tobago.
Their passing marks the loss of two generations of steelpan excellence, but the influence of their work will continue through the musicians, arrangers and steelbands that carry the instrument forward around the world.
