Savannah State Update:

Key takeaways
  • Savannah State University earned the Military Spouse Friendly® School award, highlighting comprehensive support for military families.
  • SSU provides expert navigation of VA educational benefits, dedicated scholarships, and tailored transition resources for military-connected students.
  • Recognition is based on rigorous evaluation; Savannah State will be featured in GIJOBS Magazine and on MilitaryFriendly.com.

Savannah State University (SSU) has officially been named a 2026-2027 Military Friendly® School, earning high marks for its commitment to providing veterans, active-duty service members, and their families with a clear path to academic and professional success.

In addition to the general designation, SSU also earned the Military Spouse Friendly® School award, highlighting the university’s comprehensive approach to supporting the entire military household.

“Our mission is to provide comprehensive support for all service members—including those in active duty, the reserves, National Guard, Merchant Marine, ROTC, veterans, and their families,” said Baron Jenkins, coordinator of military outreach. “These dual designations are a powerful validation of our daily efforts to ensure our military-connected students have every resource they need to thrive at Savannah State.”

As Georgia’s first public historically Black college and university, SSU remains dedicated to helping those who have served the nation transition seamlessly into civilian and campus life. SSU provides a comprehensive suite of support services, including expert navigation of VA educational benefits, dedicated scholarship opportunities, and tailored transition resources to bridge the gap between military service and higher education.

“We are incredibly proud of our faculty and staff who poured hard work and passion into helping SSU achieve this distinction,” said Dr. Marcus S. Cox, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “The designations are a testament to our unwavering commitment to supporting every member of our military community and their families.”

The Military Friendly® ratings are determined through a rigorous evaluation of public and proprietary data from a nationwide survey. Developed with input from an independent Advisory Council of veteran education experts, the list serves as a gold standard for service members seeking reliable educational partners.

Savannah State will be featured in the upcoming issue of GIJOBS Magazine and is currently highlighted on MilitaryFriendly.com.

For over 135 years, SSU has been a launching pad for innovators and changemakers. By blending rigorous academics with real-world experience, the university empowers students to lead with purpose—on campus, in their careers, and across the globe.
