“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7

In life, a person must travel many paths. These paths are designed to teach many valuable lessons and to prepare us for our final resting place. Vernella has come to the end of her journey, never to tread through this life here on earth again, and the only thing that she took on this journey was the love she had in her heart for each of her family members and friends.

Vernella Miriam Mitchell was born on May 10, 1947, to Anderson Jones and Katie Mae Savage in Hazelhurst, Georgia. She received her formal education at Jeff Davis High School in Hazlehurst, Georgia. She furthered her education at Georgia Night School, where she was on the A/B honor roll in Brunswick, Georgia. Vernella accepted Christ as her Savior on August 11, 1970, at the age of thirty. She attended various churches in her lifetime and was especially gifted with a personal knowledge of the word of God and the power of prayer.

Vernella Miriam Jones was united in holy matrimony with Arthur Mitchell on January 28, 1987, in Brunswick, GA.

She was employed by Jekyll Island Seafood Restaurant as a Head Cook. Prior to an early retirement, she worked as a lead housekeeper for St. Simons Inn. In her leisure, she enjoyed reading the Bible and Christian books, crocheting, surfing the internet, and sewing beautiful outfits for herself and She had a weekly audio appointment with her prayer partners.

Mrs. Vernella M. Mitchell departed this life on November 8, 2025. She was preceded in death by her father, Anderson Jones; mother Katie Mae Savage; three brothers, Joe Jones, Virgil Jones and Bernard Jones; six sisters, Emma J. Jones, Evelyn Jones, Daisy Jones, Maggie Jones, Majorie Jones and DeIvory Lewis.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Arthur Mitchell, Sr.; daughters, Karen (Neil) Dawson, De’Iris White, Sharon (Joe) Crawford, and Arshell Mitchell; sons, Kerry White, Jr., and Arthur (Melissa) Mitchell, Jr.; granddaughters, Christina Carter, Shanette Carter, Kierra White, Aa’leria Armstrong, Schaneille Dawson, Jaimie Crawford, Auriel Mitchell, Felicity Mitchell, Angela Lomotey, and Ke’aurie Mitchell; grandsons, Neil Dawson II, Jordan Crawford, Trey Mitchell, Kire White, Jeremiah White, and Anthony Carter; sisters; Bernice Jones, Annie Mae Wright, Connie Hamilton, Pearl Lowry, Frances King and Dorothy Martinez; brothers, Elijah Jones, Anderson Jones, Jr. and Roderick Lamar Hillery and a host of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, cousins, and friends.
