Style Spotlight: Looks, Trends & Fashion Inspiration

    Key takeaways
    • Perez Hilton live stream self harm exposed moderation delays on TikTok, raising urgent questions about real time content moderation.
    • Taylor Swift to be youngest inductee into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, celebrated for deeply personal, vulnerable songwriting.
    • First visit to Nantucket sparked desire to explore the Northeast and plan future trips, seeking authentic local gems and recs.

    BEAUTY

This write-up about the mall makeup counter experience will have you feeling nostalgic! Before Neiman Marcus arrived in Austin, we had Saks Fifth Avenue – this was where we shopped for prom dresses and bought our makeup back when I was in high school. I remember going to get my makeup done at one of their beauty counters (maybe Chanel? I can’t remember) for homecoming one year and the salesperson/artist used a foundation and powder two shades lighter than my face! I ended up paying, then promptly crying in the car and going home to wash my face and do my own makeup. So my memories are not as fond as the writer’s about the makeup counters of yore, but I do echo her sentiment about wanting to bring back a more personal touch to these shopping experiences!

    TRAVEL

As a Texan, I really haven’t explored much of the Northeast throughout my life. Even as a new resident of New York, I’ve spent most of my time settling into life in the city as opposed to venturing out elsewhere! But my recent first-time visit to Nantucket sparked something in me, and now I have alllll kinds of ideas about trips I want to plan in the Northeast! My friend Becca goes to Maine every summer and always speaks of it so highly, and then I saw this considered itinerary featuring authentic local gems and it sealed the deal. I don’t see myself going this fall, but I think it would be a really wonderful place to visit next year since I’ll have a flexible month in August! If you’ve been, please send recs!

    HEALTH

This article about the rise in demand for UV umbrellas for everyday use made me chuckle. Sun umbrellas have been popular in Asian countries for awhile, but they’re now catching on in the US thanks to social media. I wear SPF every day and often wear a hat when I know I’m going to be out in the sun, but I’m also someone who LOVES to soak up the sun and I truly believe in the power of Vitamin D for my mood and energy levels. I’m also someone who does not like to be inconvenienced, so the idea of carrying around an umbrella all day when I’m running errands or walking Reeses when it’s not raining sounds dreadful to me! Hands-free is the only way to be.

    TECH

Last week the infamous celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton, went on a TikTok live stream where he was going through a mental health crisis and harming himself on screen. TikTok has an AI tool that moderates content, which accurately flagged it and passed it onto a human moderator who had trouble removing the footage from the platform. It took about fifteen minutes, at which that point the content had been viewed by millions. It begs the question, how can tech companies moderate content that is happening in real time?

    FOOD

As I head to Carlsbad, California for three weeks tomorrow, this Bon Appetit list couldn’t have come at a better time! Each year I stay in a 2-bedroom villa that features a full kitchen, so I can totally cook while I’m there and they have most of the utensils/tools/pans I would need. While I do eat out most meals while guests come to visit me, I usually try to stay in between the old and new guests so I can have a night off. If you’re heading to a vacation rental like I am soon, don’t miss these easy vacation recipes you can make! The crispy gnocchi caprese looks right up my alley.

    MUSIC

It was announced this week that Taylor Swift will be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame! Considering how prolific she is in the space it seems like a no-brainer, especially considering her deeply personal and vulnerable lyrics are what endeared her to fans from the very beginning. The most exciting part? She’ll be the youngest-ever member inducted! Now if we could just get those wedding photos, I’d be a happy camper. Congrats to Taylor!
