Campus Spotlights: Voices from the Yard

Spelman College – “Being named a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader is a powerful affirmation of our commitment to expanding access and opportunity for our students,” said Interim President Rosalind Brewer, C’84. Spelman has been recognized all six years since the initiative launched, proving its consistency in global engagement. Learn more about the Fulbright HBCU Leaders initiative.

Morehouse College – “This recognition highlights Morehouse’s strong commitment to global education, cultural exchange, and the development of future leaders,” the College shared. This year, Morehouse is hosting João Pedro Macedo, a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant from Brazil, who is expanding Portuguese language learning and cross-cultural engagement on campus.

Lincoln University – Fulbright Program Adviser Dr. Nora Lynn Gardner explains: “Our Fulbright programs bring global perspectives, world languages and cultures, and new ideas into our students’ classrooms, our faculty’s research, and our campus community.”

North Carolina Central University – “Every Fulbright scholar who walks through our doors strengthens our campus, our community, and the global perspective we offer our students,” said Provost Ontario Wooden, Ph.D., celebrating NCCU’s third consecutive recognition.

Fayetteville State University – “This recognition is a testament to the unwavering commitment, passion, and excellence of our Bronco community,” said Provost Monica T. Leach, Ed.D. “Together, we are empowering the next generation of leaders to thrive in an ever-changing, interconnected world.” Fulbright Program Liaison Deborah McLeod Vasquez added: “Our scholars have conducted vital health research in Ghana, built educational partnerships in Germany, and advanced learning across disciplines from computer science to history.” Chancellor Darrell T. Ruth J. Simmons (Dillard University alumna)

Called her Fulbright year in France “the most enlightening and empowering experience of my young life.” Simmons went on to become the first African American president of an Ivy League university and a champion for cross-cultural understanding.

Oscar Barton Jr. (Tuskegee alum, Dean of Engineering at Morgan State)

In 2025, he participated in Fulbright’s International Education Administrators Program in France and Senegal, forging partnerships to build pipelines for engineering students to impact economies abroad. “Fulbright is a tremendous opportunity to represent engineering education globally and advocate for excellence in higher education,” Barton said.

Rhonda Collier (Tuskegee professor, Director of Global Office)

With two Fulbright experiences under her belt, Collier mentors both students and faculty, expanding Tuskegee’s global footprint. “Fulbright is a vehicle to hone world-class scholars through cultural immersion and the opportunity to represent the best of U.S. culture abroad,” she affirmed.
