4 Black Billionaires Make Forbes’ 2026 America’s Richest Self-Made Women List

Forbes has released its 2026 America’s Richest Self-Made Women list, and four Black women are among the billionaires featured: Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Rihanna, and Sheila Johnson.

The ranking includes 43 women across sectors such as media and entertainment, retail, technology, food and beverage, and logistics. For these four Black women, the recognition reflects more than individual wealth. It speaks to the power of ownership, brand-building, and long-term influence in industries where Black women have often had to create their own lanes.

Below is a closer look at each.

Oprah Winfrey at No. 16 with $3.2 Billion

Oprah is the richest Black woman in America and the highest-ranking Black woman on the list, coming in at No. 16 with a net worth Forbes estimates at $3.2 billion. Born into poverty in rural Mississippi, she landed her first TV job at 17. Later, she turned The Oprah Winfrey Show into the highest-rated talk show in television history, drawing roughly 15 million viewers daily over its 25-year run.

Those earnings became the seed money for a sprawling business empire. Harpo Productions, the OWN network, has a long-term content partnership with Apple and real estate holdings in California. Also, there are over 2,100 acres in Hawaii, and investment returns from wellness companies, including a highly profitable stake in Weight Watchers. Since 2023, her net worth has grown from $2.3 billion, a rise fuelled by the continued expansion of her portfolio well into her seventh decade.

Sheila Johnson at No. 32 with $1.2 Billion

Sheila Johnson rounds out the group at $1 billion, and her story is one of reinvention as much as founding. She co-founded Black Entertainment Television (BET) with her then-husband Robert Johnson in 1979. They built it into one of the most recognized cable networks in America before the company was sold to Viacom. After her divorce in 2002, Johnson took her share of the proceeds and built something entirely her own. 

She built a portfolio of luxury hotels, real estate investments, and sports franchises that made history. Also, she is the first Black woman to hold ownership stakes in three major professional sports teams simultaneously. She has investments in the Washington Capitals, the Washington Wizards, and the Washington Commanders.

Her wealth grew to $1.2 billion in 2026, continuing a rise that has made her a consistent presence on the Forbes list.

Rihanna at No. 39 with $1 Billion

Rihanna is tied with Beyoncé at No. 39, though Forbes notes that the bulk of her fortune comes not from music but from business. When she launched Fenty Beauty in 2017 with 40 foundation shades at a time when most cosmetics brands offered a fraction of that range. The product sold out within hours and generated $100 million in revenue in its first week.

 Co-owned with luxury conglomerate LVMH, Fenty Beauty has since expanded into skincare and fragrance. Her lingerie brand ‘Savage X Fenty adds another pillar to a portfolio valued in the billions. 

Forbes estimates her 2026 net worth at $1 billion, reflecting a slight pullback from a 2025 peak due to a period of flat Fenty Beauty sales. She is also reportedly working on a new studio album, her first since 2016’s Anti, which would open yet another revenue stream.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter at No. 39 with  $1 Billion

Beyoncé’s appearance on the 2026 list marks a milestone. She is a new addition, crossing the billion-dollar threshold for the first time. Forbes credits her 2025 Cowboy Carter Tour, which grossed more than $450 million in ticket sales and merchandise, as the catalyst. 

However, her wealth is broader than any single tour. Her career stretches back more than 30 years, beginning with Destiny’s Child before one of the most successful solo runs in modern music history. In recent years, she has diversified deliberately, launching her haircare brand Cécred in 2024 and her Texas whiskey label SirDavis in partnership with Moët Hennessy, making her an increasingly formidable figure outside of the recording studio. Forbes places her net worth at approximately $1.4 billion.

Four Female Black Billionaires 

The fact that only four Black women appear on a list of 43 is itself a story. In a country with more than 3,400 billionaires, fewer than 30 are Black, and of those, only four are women. Forbes notes that while none of the women on the list inherited their wealth, some have climbed farther and overcome more obstacles than others to get there. 

The four Black women who made this year’s list built their fortunes through ownership, whether of companies, content, brands, or venues, and across industries they often had to reshape to fit them. Their presence on the list is a marker of how far individual women can push, and a reminder of just how much further the broader landscape has to go.
