    Key takeaways
    • Trevor Bailey says police leadership promotes good public relations and rejects brutality; occasional failures should not define the entire force.
    • Bailey assures a thorough investigation into the alleged beating of a handcuffed, mentally ill man, led by an assistant superintendent.
    • Proven leaks to criminals will prompt immediate dismissal; leadership stresses officers must consider the human impact on victims and families.
    • Bailey supports a public poll on public trust and affirms citizens' right to record officers; officers must not seize phones.

St. Vincent Deputy Commissioner of police Trevor Bailey and Voices host Jomo Thomas, last Monday engaged in a pointed discussion regarding the state of police-public relations and the necessity of accountability within the force.

Thomas argued that while citizens desire a relationship with law enforcement and seek redress when victimized, they often perceive the police as an occupying or aggressive force rather than a protective one.

He further claimed that the police force has lost its focus on serving the community, partly because it has evolved into an employment agency over the last decade, leading to a lack of essential de-escalation skills among officers.

In response to these criticisms, bailey asserted that the leadership of the police force consistently advocates for members to practice good public relations and does not condone heavy-handedness or brutality.

He acknowledged that the force occasionally falls short of expectations but urged the public not to judge the entire organization by the actions of a few.

When Thomas suggested that the police enjoy very little public trust, comparing their reputation to junk bonds, bailey welcomed the idea of conducting a public opinion poll to identify issues and implement corrective measures.

The conversation also turned to specific incidents of alleged misconduct, including a recent case where six officers reportedly beat a handcuffed, mentally ill man near the police barracks.

Bailey assured the public that the investigation, led by an assistant superintendent, is being conducted thoroughly and has not been swept under the rug. He emphasized that the police leadership wants such incidents to stop and reminded officers that they are dealing with human beings whose families are also affected by their actions.

Further addressing internal accountability, bailey stated that proven instances of officers leaking information to criminals would result in immediate dismissal without sympathy.

He also clarified that citizens have a right to record police officers performing their duties in public spaces and instructed officers not to interfere with or seize the phones of those filming them.

Bailey concluded that while the police sometimes drive away potential partners through their own mistakes, they remain committed to ensuring national safety and will not surrender territory to criminal elements.
