A legal name change has a funny way of revealing how many versions of you are stored in travel systems. Your bank may know you by a married name while your passport still carries the one you used before the wedding, or a divorce decree may restore a surname that an airline profile abandoned years ago. Add a flight booked months earlier, TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, and a loyalty account, and the same person can suddenly exist under several perfectly legitimate names.

The problem usually surfaces when one of those records meets another, perhaps during online check-in or when a Known Traveler Number suddenly stops producing PreCheck. Airports care about the identity attached to the trip in front of them, so getting the sequence right can spare you from sorting out your new name at a check-in counter.

Let The Passport Run The Trip

For a U.S. domestic flight, use the name on the government-issued ID you plan to present at security. Internationally, a passport still carrying a previous surname gives you the name to use for the booking. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says citizens who change their names through marriage, divorce, or another legal process may travel on a valid U.S. passport in the previous name while carrying proof of the change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.

The more urgent problem arises after the passport has been updated while an existing ticket still carries the old name. American Airlines draws a precise distinction here. Its name-correction policy covers married, maiden, divorced, legal, misspelled, inverted, and secondary surnames when the traveler remains the same person. Moving the ticket to another passenger counts as a name change, which American bars.

For an eligible correction, American reissues the ticket at the original fare, keeps the flights and dates unchanged, and waives the name-correction fee. When partner airlines are involved, the correction can become more involved. An American-issued itinerary containing an AA codeshare or another airline’s flight becomes a major correction and requires a new passenger name record. If another carrier issued a separate ticket, American directs passengers to contact that airline and follow its rules instead.

A certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order earns its carry-on space here, since CBP tells U.S. citizens traveling on a valid passport under a previous name to carry proof showing the legal name progression. That document may serve a dual purpose once the traveler decides to update the passport itself.

Under current State Department rules, someone whose passport issuance and legal name change both happened within the past year can use Form DS-5504, submit the current passport, an original or certified name-change document, and a new photo, and pay no standard fee. After that one-year window, the process changes. A mail renewal requires a certified copy of the legal name-change document, while an eligible in-person applicant can use valid ID in the new name and complete the marriage details on Form DS-11.

The passport update can also set off changes elsewhere. CBP requires a fresh ESTA when a Visa Waiver Program traveler receives a new passport or changes a name. Visas and residence permits follow the rules of the governments that issued them, so anyone carrying either should check what happens to those permissions before replacing the passport they are tied to.

Update The Travel Accounts That Still Know The Old You

An old name in TSA PreCheck can become a problem as soon as the new surname starts appearing on flight reservations. TSA says members who change their names must update their PreCheck record before the benefit will work under the new details, and name changes can take up to 45 days. For Global Entry, the update works a little differently: ordinary passport information can be changed through the Trusted Traveler Programs account, whereas a passport update involving a name change requires a visit to a Global Entry enrollment center.

Once the government records are sorted, airline loyalty accounts are the next place an old name can linger. Delta Air Lines requires legal documentation, such as a court order, marriage certificate, or divorce certificate, and states that the SkyMiles name must match the legal ID used for travel. American also requires supporting documentation for an AAdvantage name change and handles those requests online or by mail instead of by phone.

With each system moving on its own timeline, updating every record at once can create more work than it saves. The next booked trip should set the order, especially when a change such as TSA PreCheck can take weeks to process.
