Style Spotlight: Looks, Trends & Fashion Inspiration

    Key takeaways
    • Lemon water acts as a natural diuretic, reducing fluid retention and easing bloating, per Jodi Greebel, MS, RDN.
    • Vogue reports lemon boosts digestion, stimulates bile and gastric juices, helping prevent gas and indigestion.
    • Drinking warm lemon water first thing hydrates the colon, improves gut transit, aids constipation, and helps keep bloating at bay.

They say an apple a day can keep the doctor away, but we are here to tell you that lemons aren’t bad at the job either! This amazing little citrus contains several properties that can help you deal with our common enemy… bloat. So today, we are going to quickly discuss why does lemon water help bloating?

Well, truth be told, us girls bloat at the drop of hat. On our periods we bloat. Off them, we still blow up.

Due to stress we bloat. After we eat. When we don’t eat! It’s an unfair part of lady life and we have to do our best to survive. How? Lemon water.

It’s a powerful combination that can help you deflate. First of all, the water itself is going to help you. Water helps to flush you out. Think of it like Drano for your body. We use a product like Drano to pour down our bathroom/kitchen pipes in order to fix clogs.

Well, by drinking plenty of water you can flush anything that may be causing you problems. Including whatever is causing you to bloat in the first place. So it may sound counterproductive; but when you are experiencing another bloating blowup; remember that water is your friend.

Over the years, Chamomile or mint tea have been touted as the Queens of Alleviatinb Bloat. However, what about lemon? Jodi Greebel, MS, RDN explains,

“Lemon water decreases bloating because it acts as a diuretic which actually helps when you are retaining fluids.”

Very interesting. However, lemons can help us in some many other essential ways. Lemon also contains Vitamin C, vitamin B, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and enzymes. Therefore, it can aid your anti-aging endeavors, digestion and improve your gut health as well.

Vogue magazine also dove into the research behind lemons. The journal reports:

“It helps kick-start the digestion process. It also helps fight indigestion, heartburn, and bloating. Additionally, lemon is known to stimulate the production of bile and gastric juices and can therefore prevent gas formation.

[Lemon water also] improves gut transit and hydrates the colon. Which is why it can help with constipation, especially on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. In addition, lemon, being rich in fiber.”

Bloating often occurs due to the formation of gas. So if you can stop or prevent it from happening, you will save yourself a moment of inflation. Drinking a cup of lemon in warm water every morning can help aid in your digestion and keep the bloat at bay. So next time you’re feeling like a cute little balloon; reach for a glass of lemon water. Your body will thank you.
