I’ve had this Gabriela Hearst bag for years now – it’s one I bought back in 2018, and while living in Texas didn’t feel like I had many opportunities to wear it. It’s not the most practical silhouette as it doesn’t hold much, and it’s not a great travel item because it’s fairly heavy and doesn’t pack totally flat. It mostly sat in my closet, and I held onto it as a decorative piece that I’d occasionally have a chance to wear. I even thought about putting it on The Real Real and selling it, but I am SO glad I didn’t end up doing that!

Now that I’m in New York, I’ve got dinners and events a plenty that call for an eye-catching accessory like this bag. It’s an incredible ice breaker – literally everyone I come into contact with asks about it or wants to touch/hold it! The accordion-style shape, rounded handle and boxy structure gives it a very vintage feel – almost luggage like, I think. I’m especially happy I have it right now, as snakeskin accessories are all the rage at the moment! What I love most about it though, is the fact that it can fully transform and elevate even the most simple of outfits.

It got me thinking about other accessories that make an impact and upgrade an ensemble. Whether that be an eye-catching pop of red from a cardigan or cute flat, a bold beaded necklace atop your most basic white tee, or a pretty scarf styled impeccably in your hair, around your wrist, or tied onto your handbag, accessories can make or break a look. This little black dress is actually the perfect example!

Styled by itself, it’s just your typical LBD – it would look entirely different styled with sneakers and a jean jacket, or layered over a button-down with Mary Jane flats. The red cardigan over my shoulders adds a trending pop of color (and is a practical styling tool!), while the bag adds texture with both the interesting shape and snakeskin pattern. Even with these two statement items added, the look still feels chic – keeping the rest of the accessories streamlined in classic black helps maintain that effortless feel. The end result is polished and fresh, while still feeling timeless!
