CAT Reaffirms Zero Tolerance Policy After Assault On Bus Operator And Passenger – Chatham Area Transit (CAT)

6/17/2025 – Chatham Area Transit Authority (CAT) is reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy against violence following an incident that occurred on Monday, June 16, around 5:00 p.m.

A CAT bus operator and a passenger were both assaulted while on duty and in transit. The Savannah Police Department (SPD) responded swiftly to the scene, and the suspect involved was arrested and charged. In addition to legal action, CAT has permanently banned the individual from using any CAT services.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the risks our operators and riders can face,” said Chairman Deidrick Cody. “Safety is not negotiable. We are committed to protecting our frontline staff and the public who rely on our services each day.”

Interim Executive Director/CEO Stephanie Cutter echoed the seriousness of the situation. “We are deeply disturbed by this act of violence and are taking every measure to ensure the continued safety of our riders and employees.”

CAT remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a safe transit experience for everyone. As part of its ongoing efforts, CAT continues to promote the “See Something, Say Something” campaign, encouraging riders and the community to report any suspicious behavior or safety concerns immediately.

CAT is also offering support services through Edel Care, its Employee Assistance Program (EAP), for all staff affected by the incident. Counselors were available today and will be available by appointment to speak confidentially with team members moving forward.
