The residents of Historic Carver Village are closer to getting a community gym. The nationally registered historic community was established in 1948 to provide affordable housing for working-class African Americans in Savannah. The community has waited more than 50 years for a facility which will be located adjacent the current community center. The City of Savannah and the Chatham County Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement that gives the county access to build on city owned land next to the community center. The County has to start construction within three years of the agreement.
- The City of Savannah and Chatham County Commissioners approved an agreement for the gym's construction adjacent to the community center.
- Funding will come from SPLOST-7 for construction, operations, and maintenance of the facility.
- The community will actively participate through a design committee to ensure the project meets their needs.
The project will use Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST-7) funds to cover construction, operations and maintenance. The community led projects plans call for a regulation-size basketball court, locker rooms and space for families to watch from the stands. A design committee that includes community members will help guide the project.
Before construction begins, the county must complete final designs and secure city permit.
