Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPS) Update:

Key takeaways
  • SCCPSS recognized as a High Achiever in Family Engagement by Project Appleseed, enhancing family involvement in education.
  • Initiatives like the Annual Family Engagement Resource Fair and STEAM Expo empower families and promote student success.
  • Each Title I school has a Family Resource Center and active teams, fostering parent engagement through workshops and events.
  • Community collaborations, such as with P.A.C.K., enhance student well-being and reflect SCCPSS' commitment to educational excellence.

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has been recognized as a High Achiever in Family Engagement by Project Appleseed. Project Appleseed is part of a national campaign for public school improvement by being a leading advocate for public school families in America, working to empower parents and communities to take an active role in their children’s education and advocate for policies that support student success.

The organization was found in St. Louis, Missouri in 1993 by Kevin Walker, an African-American public school parent and grandparent, who recognized the need for more active and engaged families in the educational process. The organization’s mission is to make family engagement a systemic, integrated, and sustained school improvement strategy, with a focus on low-income and under-served families and schools.  Project Appleseed’s programs and initiatives have had a significant impact on schools and communities across the country.

This recognition for SCCPSS reflects the wide range of impactful initiatives that engage, empower, and uplift families in our district throughout the year. District-led programs such as the Annual Family Engagement Community Resource Fair, the Student Success STEAM Expo, Books, Blankets & Family Fun, and the LEAP Upskilling and Reskilling Program provide families with resources, workforce opportunities, and memorable learning experiences. In addition, our Family & Community Engagement Advisory Council, partnership with Parent University, and innovative efforts like the Digital Family Learning Workshop ensure families are supported and equipped as essential partners in education.

At the school level, each SCCPSS Title I school maintains a Family Resource Center and active Family & Community Action Team, offering parent workshops, curriculum-focused nights, and events like Muffins with Mom and Donuts with Dad. Our schools also partner with organizations such as P.A.C.K., which provides thousands of weekend meal bags to students, demonstrating how community collaboration directly enhances student well-being and achievement.

The Project Appleseed recognition highlights Savannah-Chatham’s unwavering commitment to family and community engagement as a cornerstone of educational excellence.
