Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

    Key takeaways
    • Filming predominantly took place in Bizkaia, using real towns like Mungia, Mundaka, and Bilbao for authenticity.
    • Striking Basque locations (cliffs, coastal towns, modern houses) create a brooding, emotionally charged visual atmosphere.
    • Mungia and Mundaka served specific narrative roles: domestic claustrophobia and tense coastal sequences, respectively.
    • Best visiting seasons are spring or fall (May–June, Sept–Oct) to avoid summer crowds and enjoy mild weather.
    • Transportation in the Basque region includes buses (Txik Txak, Euskotren autobusa), trams, metro, cycling, taxis, and walking for short trips.

“Ángela” (or Angela) is a Spanish psychological thriller that was released in July 2024 but premiered on Netflix on Sept. 26, 2025. This series was produced by Buendía Estudios Bizkaia in collaboration with Atresmedia, as Variety reports. It serves as an adaptation of “Angela Black,” bringing a tense atmosphere and emotionally charged narrative, both of which have contributed to it climbing the platform’s charts. The powerful cast includes Verónica Sánchez, Daniel Grao, Jaime Zatarain and Lucía Jiménez.

This series explores a woman’s battle to break free from control, manipulation and hidden truths. For both Spanish and international viewers, “Ángela” has drawn attention for its use of striking Basque filming locations. These areas include striking cliff edges, coastal towns and modern houses, contributing to the overall mood of the series. Here’s what we know about the production behind “Ángela,” plus tips for planning your own trip to Spain.

    Where Was ‘Ángela’ Filmed?

The majority of filming for the series was done in Vizcaya/Bizkaia, the Spanish Basque province often called Biscay, per Netflix Junkie. Although production details have not been entirely shared, some specific towns have been connected to this release. Mungía (Mungia), Mundaka (Mundaca/Mundaka), Bilbao, Ea, Bermeo, Getxo and Gorliz all contributed to “Ángela.” Many natural exteriors in the region were used, per Instagram production posts. These towns helped to shape the series’ atmosphere as a brooding setting.

This means that instead of relying heavily on soundstages, the series creators chose to ground “Ángela” in real locations. But as Buendía Estudios reports, the natural exteriors of Mungia, Mundaka and Bilbao were the most central to the series’ storytelling. More specifically, Mungia was a recurring home setting while Mundaka’s coastal scenery was the setting for more tense sequences.

Planning Your Trip To Spain’s Beautiful Basque Region

Key Scenes: Filming took place entirely in this location, according to Netflix Junkie. Directors used a lot of visual contrasts to really evoke the emotional journey the narrative takes. For scenes that convey a sense of isolation for the main character, suburban and rural landscapes were captured.

Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit the Basque region of Spain is considered to be either spring or fall. These seasons, which are between May and June or September and October, offer ideal weather conditions. There’s also no peak summer crowds, which makes exploring the area that much more enjoyable.

Transportation Options: The Basque region of Spain features an extensive network of buses. Thankfully for visitors, this is one of the most common ways to get around; they can choose between options like Txik Txak or Euskotren autobusa. Additionally, urban trams, metro systems, cycling, taxis, ride-sharing and walking are good for shorter distances.

Filming for this series took place in the province of Bizkaia, located in Spain’s Basque Country. This region is known for its rugged natural beauty and contrasting cosmopolitan cityscapes. It is a filmmaker’s dream, as Spain Screen Tourism reports, since it has both chic, modern architecture and stunning, storm-beaten cliffs. In terms of Mundaka’s filming impact, its dramatic coastline and Ogoño Rock make an appearance.

While in Mungia, the slim streets amplify the tension and claustrophobia that Ángela (Verónica Sánchez) feels at home and in her life. However, in contrast, Bilbao’s sleek skyline lends a sharp and modern feel to certain parts of the narrative. Yet it was the Gorliz lighthouse that became one of the series’ most iconic images and filming locations. This windswept, lonely and highly perched place above the sea somewhat mirrors Ángela’s inner turmoil.

These locations weren’t chosen absentmindedly. They are a narrative hint that points to her entrapment and gives the series a unique visual identity. For fans planning a visit to the area, there’s much to see and do since the region is steadily becoming a cinematic hub.

Things to Do: The Bizkaia Bridge and Arriaga Theater are two popular attractions around Bilbao. These locations are approximately 25 minutes apart by car.

Where to Eat: Bilbao is a big cultural hub in the province of Bizkaia, where foodies will find some delectable eateries. The Gure Toki is a popular tapas restaurant with a modern, chic ambiance. Another great place to grab a bite to eat is the Restaurante NidoBilbao (or NIDO BILBAO). It offers classic cuisine in a rustic environment.

Where to Stay: The best place to stay in this province depends on the traveler. For more urban access, Bilbao is a popular destination. So, a place like Hotel Carlton would be an ideal, higher-end option. But for quieter or coastal vibes, Mundaka or Getxo are ideal. In Mundaka, there is Apartamentos Mundaka, a scenic and tranquil apartment hotel.
