    • Ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by SSU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local leaders including Mayor Van R. Johnson.
    • President Dr. Jermaine Whirl emphasized Tiger Walk as a symbol of SSU’s connection to Savannah and commitment to community and progress.
    • Installation aims to link the campus community with downtown, reinforcing partnerships with city, county, and Enmarket.

Savannah State University (SSU) officially cut the ribbon on Tiger Walk at the Enmarket Arena today, marking a vibrant new physical installment of SSU Tiger Pride right in Savannah’s entertainment epicenter.

The ceremony, held under bright blue skies, took place just days before the start of the 2025 SSU Homecoming festivities (October 19-25) and was energized by the presence of SSU students, cheerleaders, faculty, staff, and alumni.

SSU President Dr. Jermaine Whirl was joined by city and county leaders to celebrate the unveiling of the installation. Attendees included SSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni; Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson; State Representative Edna Jackson; Chatham County Commission Chairman Chester A. Ellis and Commissioner Malinda Scott Hodge; Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Bert Brantley; and representatives from Enmarket.

“Today is a proud and historic day for Savannah State University,” said Dr. Whirl. “As the first institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah, we are honored to extend the spirit of the Tiger Nation beyond our campus and into the heart of the city. Tiger Walk is more than an installation—it’s a symbol of our deep connection to Savannah and our ongoing commitment to education, community, and progress. We’re grateful to our partners in the city, the county, and Enmarket for helping bring this vision to life.”

The Tiger Walk is a permanent fixture designed to celebrate the university’s heritage and connect the campus community with the heart of downtown.
