Florida A&M University’s Gospel Choir drew a packed audience for the spirit-filled finale of FAMU’s “Eternal World Tour” Homecoming Sunday evening with a concert of praise and worship inside Lee Hall Auditorium.
Vice President of the FAMU Gospel Choir, Cordai Epting said closing the week’s festivities with worship was both a humbling and joyful experience after months of preparation.
“It feels like a breath of fresh air,” Epting said. “Seeing all the hard work come to life was amazing. God really showed up — the atmosphere was electric. The auditorium was filled from top to bottom; there wasn’t a single empty seat in sight. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”
The FAMU Gospel Choir serves as a creative and spiritual space for students to connect through music and ministry.
“There’s something powerful about seeing young people willingly worship and praise God together, especially in today’s world,” Epting said. “It reminds us that while we live in the world, we don’t have to be of it. That’s the beauty of this choir we represent faith, authenticity and community through worship.”
President Tahj Merriex reflected on one of the songs from this year’s set list that resonated most with the group, “For the Rest of My Life” by Vincent Bohanan.
“As college students, every day we make a conscious decision to live for Christ and do things right,” Merriex said. “It’s not always easy to walk that path on campus; it’s important to keep making the conscious decisions to live for Christ, for the rest of our lives.”
Merriex spoke to the choir’s unity and success when asked how he kept the group motivated and unified leading up to the performance,
“We lean on the foundation we’ve built with having an intimate setting and a close-knit family,” he said. “In the Bible, family is a cornerstone being able to lean on your brothers and sisters in Christ and having them uphold you when times get hard, while keeping God at the center, keeps us strong.”
Carina Edwards, parliamentarian of the FGC, said the concert’s success was a meaningful end to Homecoming Week.
“Seeing the whole homecoming experience culminate in such a spiritual and supportive space really meant a lot to us,” Edwards said. “It showed how much love and support we have from the campus and alumni.”
Edwards also expressed how important faith is to her.
“Keeping God at the center of everything we do as a FAMUly is essential to our strength as an institution,” she said.
One of the night’s highlights was the appearance of the children’s choir, whose harmonies delighted the audience.
“The energy of the kids was so beautiful,” Edwards said. “Watching the connection between the director and the children made me appreciate the relationship between choirs and their leaders.”
Epting hinted that the Gospel Choir has more in store for fans.
