Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPS) Update:

    Key takeaways
    • Read United Day launches a month-long Reading Challenge for Pre-K through 2nd grade students and caring adults.
    • Students receive a STAR reading calendar and magnet to track daily shared reading at home.
    • Families read together daily for 10, 15, or 20 minutes; any book format counts, including e-books and library books.
    • Complete a short registration, color a STAR each reading day, and upload the completed calendar by March 6 at uwce.org/reading-rocks.
    • Completing families enter school and district drawings; winners include special prizes and a grade-wide pizza party.

United Way of the Coastal Empire will host Read United Day on Friday, Jan. 30, with volunteers visiting Savannah-Chatham elementary classrooms across the district. Volunteers will read aloud to students and donate a new book to each classroom, promoting early literacy and a lifelong love of reading.

Read United Day 2026 will impact more than 20,000 children in pre-K through second grade throughout Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Long, and Liberty counties. Read United Day will kick off a month-long Reading Challenge for our students, a fun and meaningful way to build daily reading habits at home.  The challenge is designed for Pre-K through 2nd grade students and a caring adult or older sibling.   On Read United Day, students will receive a STAR reading calendar and magnet to kick off the Shared Reading Challenge and help track their daily reading at home. The challenge will take place from February 1 through February 28. During this time, we encourage families to read together every day for 10, 15, or 20 minutes. Any book counts – school library books,  books from Live Oak Public Libraries, e-books, or even a favorite story read again and again.

    Participation is easy.

    –      Complete a short registration form.

    –      Display the reading calendar somewhere visible, like the refrigerator.

    –      After each day of reading, families color in one STAR—no need to track minutes.

    –      When the challenge ends, families upload a photo of the completed calendar to uwce.org/reading-rocks by March 6.

School winners will be announced on March 19th. Every student who completes the challenge and submits their photo will be entered into a drawing at their school. One STAR Reader at each school will receive a special prize.

All school-level STAR Readers will also be entered into a district-wide drawing. One lucky student will win a pizza party for their entire grade at their school, to be held in April.

    Celebrate our Super Star Readers!

If you need a calendar, please find it here.
