City of Savannah: Official News, Events & Community Updates

    Key takeaways
    • Let faucets drip overnight when temperatures fall below freezing to keep water moving and prevent pipe stagnation.
    • Insulate pipes, seal cracks with caulk, close and drain outdoor faucets, and use faucet covers to prevent freezing.
    • Set thermostats to at least 50°F, open cabinets overnight, report leaks to 311, and monitor forecasts for subfreezing nights.

Savannah – Ahead of the anticipated Winter Weather this weekend, the City of Savannah is recommending all residents winterize their water pipes to avoid freezing and bursting.

The City of Savannah recommends residents let faucets drip overnight this weekend each night when temperatures fall below freezing to keep water moving and prevent stagnation in the pipes. Additionally, residents should close and drain any outdoor faucets and use faucet covers to protect them. Insulating pipes is the most effective way to prevent them from freezing. The City recommends caulk to seal cracks around pipes on your walls, both inside and outside in order to help insulate them.

Thermostats should be set to at least 50°F even if the house is vacant. Overnight, open all cupboards and vanities which can help keep pipes warm. As freezing weather approaches, keep outside valves open so any remaining water can expand without breaking the pipe. Residents are advised to report water leaks to 311.

An Extreme Cold Weather Watch has been issued for Savannah and Chatham County. Dangerously cold temperatures will move into our area Saturday evening and continue through Monday morning. Temperatures will drop into the low 20s, with wind chill temperatures dropping below 10 degrees. There is a chance of rain and/or snow Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

Residents should continue to monitor weather forecasts and take cold weather precautions for pipes any night temperatures are expected to dip below freezing.

In addition to preparations for pipes, residents are reminded to take the following precautions for people, pets and plants:

    • Minimize time outdoors for people and pets while temperatures are below freezing
    • Check in on elderly or vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors to make sure they are okay
    • Cover plants before freezing temperatures arrive
