SAVANNAH – Savannah is expected to experience dangerously cold temperatures from Sunday night, Dec. 14, through Tuesday morning, Dec. 16, as an arctic cold front moves through the area. Overnight and early morning temperatures, combined with strong winds, could feel like the teens or even near 10 degrees.

Because of these conditions, the City and its community partners are taking extra steps to help keep people safe. Shelter capacity is being expanded, warming center space is available, and transportation assistance will be provided for individuals experiencing homelessness or anyone without adequate heat.

The Tompkins Regional Center, 2333 Ogeechee Road, will open Sunday at 7 p.m., closing at 7 a.m. the following morning for residents in need of a last resort overnight shelter. Pets, under the owner’s control, are welcome. Capacity at the warming center will be limited. Please see below a full list of available warming centers, shelters and resources.

Cold Weather Safety Tips
Residents are encouraged to take precautions during this period of extreme cold by limiting time outdoors, checking on elderly neighbors or those without adequate heat, and bringing pets indoors. It’s also important to know the signs of cold-related illnesses and seek help immediately if symptoms appear.

Protecting Pipes During a Hard Freeze
To help prevent freezing and bursting pipes, residents should allow both cold and hot water to drip slowly from faucets during overnight hours. Opening cabinets under sinks can help warm air circulate around plumbing, and insulating exposed pipes—especially in unheated areas—provides added protection. Homeowners should also ensure they know where their main water shutoff valve is located in case of an emergency.
