Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips

Key takeaways
  • Stylist Anh Co Tran balanced structure with a soft, undone updo to complement the Louis Vuitton dress, calling it whimsical.
  • He smoothed hair with a paddle brush to restore natural, soft movement and establish a gentle, workable base for styling.
  • Anh Co Tran created zigzag sections, twisted sides into a double knot, pinned for dimension, and refined face-framing with the Dyson Airwrap Co-anda2x.
  • Finished with Milbon Weightless Texture Spray plus Flex Memory Hold and Firm Hold hairsprays for long-lasting, airy shape; watch on Instagram.

After attending the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars Viewing Party, Alysa Liu transitioned into a second look for the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party. Building on the soft texture and waves created earlier in the evening, Anh Co Tran transformed her hair into a whimsical, sculpted updo with effortless movement.

“When I saw the cool, beautiful dress from Louis Vuitton, I thought about doing something soft and undone to balance the structural element of it. I think it’s a great juxtaposition of the overall vibe to have a more effortless, whimsical look. I love the dress!” – Anh Co Tran

Here’s how Anh styled Alysa’s second look of the night.

1. Establishing the base

Starting with the wavy texture Anh created earlier in the evening, he used a paddle brush to gently smooth the hair and remove any tangles. This re-established natural, soft movement to serve as a foundation for the updo.

2. Creating the Knot

To begin shaping the updo, Anh first created a radial section starting from the top of the ear and clipped it aside, reserving it for use later on during his style.

Next, Anh split the remaining hair from the top of the head down to the nape using a zig-zag section.

He then gathered the hair from both sides of the section and twisted them into a double knot structure to build dimension. He secured the knots in place with pins.

3. Detailing the Face-Framing

Anh returned to the radial sections that were clipped aside earlier. He softly incorporated these pieces into the knots and pinned them loosely. He intentionally left out some strands to enhance the softness of her look with an undone, whimsical effect.

To refine the loose, face-framing sections left out of the knot, Anh used the Dyson Airwrap Co-anda2x with 1.6” curling barrel to enhance the existing waves.

For an even softer result, he wrapped the hair around the Airwrap barrel while holding the ends, allowing the curls to form gentle bends.

4. Finishing the Look

For extra texture in Alysa’s updo, Anh lightly misted Milbon’s Weightless Dry Texture Spray 4 throughout the hair.

He then used Milbon’s Flex Memory Hold Hairspray 7 to place the hair, and set the look with Milbon’s Firm Hold Shielding Hairspray 10 for long-lasting hold throughout the evening.

The Final Result

Alysa’s second look of the night transformed her earlier waves into a romantic, whimsical updo with an undone, organic shape. The soft knots, airy texture, and face-framing details created an effortless style, perfectly suited for the glamour of the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party.
