Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPS) Update:

    Key takeaways
    • SCCPSS had 16 schools honored statewide for measurable excellence, highlighting sustained student growth and schoolwide commitment.
    • The Literacy Leader Awards honor high achievement and growth in third and sixth grades, emphasizing reading mastery and closing learning gaps.
    • The Math Leader Awards celebrate strong numeracy in fifth and eighth grades, recognizing excellence and notable progress toward proficiency.
    • The John Hancock Banner rewards 90% cursive proficiency; the Military Flagship honors schools supporting military-connected students and families.

A morning of pride, recognition, and celebration filled the auditorium at the Garrison School for the Arts as Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods visited the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) on April 10.

Educators, students, and community leaders gathered at the Yamacraw Performing Arts Center to celebrate the presentation of Georgia’s prestigious Military Flagship honors, John Hancock banners, and Literacy and Math Leader awards. These recognitions highlight schools that are not only meeting expectations but exceeding them in meaningful, measurable ways.

Sixteen SCCPSS schools were recognized for their dedication to student success:

    • Charles Ellis Montessori School – Math & Literacy
    • Coastal Middle School – Math
    • Garrison School for the Arts – Math, Literacy & John Hancock
    • Georgetown K-8 – Math & Literacy
    • Godley Station K-8 – Math
    • Hesse K-8 – Math & Literacy
    • Marshpoint Elementary – John Hancock
    • Myers Middle School – Military Flagship
    • Pulaski K-8 – John Hancock
    • Savannah Arts Academy – Math & Literacy
    • Savannah Classical Academy – Math & Literacy
    • Savannah Early College – Literacy
    • STEM Academy at Bartlett – Literacy
    • Susie King Taylor School – Literacy
    • Tybee Island Maritime Academy – Math & Literacy
    • Woodville-Tompkins High School – Math

Each award represents a commitment to excellence and a story of growth, perseverance, and impact.

The Literacy Leader Awards spotlight schools where students are mastering one of the most critical life skills: reading. With a focus on third and sixth grades, these awards recognize both high achievement and significant growth, especially in schools working to close learning gaps.

The Math Leader Awards celebrate strong numeracy skills in fifth and eighth grades, honoring schools where students are excelling or making remarkable progress toward proficiency.

The John Hancock Banner is a unique distinction awarded to schools where at least 90% of eligible students demonstrate proficiency in cursive writing, keeping the skill alive in modern classrooms.

The Military Flagship Award recognizes schools like Myers Middle School that go the extra mile to support military-connected students and families, creating welcoming environments that understand and respond to their unique challenges.

These recognitions go beyond banners and titles. They reflect the daily work happening inside classrooms across SCCPSS, where teachers inspire curiosity, students push boundaries, and communities support success.
