City of Savannah Celebrates Heritage Place Apartments Renovation, Rededication Ceremony
SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah today joined Mercy Housing Southeast (MHSE) to celebrate the renovation of Heritage Place Apartments, an affordable housing community in Savannah’s historic Cuyler-Brownville neighborhood.
Mayor Van R. Johnson, II, joined other elected officials, community leaders, and financial partners for a rededication ceremony to honor the preservation of two historically significant buildings: Charity Hospital, founded in 1893 as the McKane School for Nurses, the first hospital in Savannah to train Black nurses and doctors after the Civil War; and the Florance Street School, erected in 1928 as one of the first modern schools for African American children in the South, desegregated in 1971, and remained an elementary school until 1987.
“Today’s rededication ceremony is proof positive of the City’s commitment to the Cuyler-Brownville community, our collaborative partnerships, our preservation efforts of two historically significant buildings, and Savannah’s affordable housing pledge,” said Mayor Johnson. “These structures, this community, and our residents are a testament of continued faith, partnership, and perseverance.”
The affordable housing community upgrades were made possible, in part, by the City of Savannah’s support of Mercy Housing’s 2022 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) application to the State of Georgia, with $560,000 from the Savannah Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF). The City’s SAHF commitment enabled Mercy to compete for and be awarded tax credits necessary to undertake the $24 million renovation and preserve the 88 affordable apartments for another 30 years.
The newly renovated Heritage Place Apartments consist of new roofs and windows, brick work repair, new gutters and downspouts, sidewalk repairs, fresh paint, and new lighting. Additionally, each apartment home has new flooring, wall repairs, new cabinetry and appliances, new plumbing, HVAC updates, and more.
The partnership is a collaboration among the City of Savannah, US Bank, Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), Georgia Office of Budget and Policy, Choate Construction, GM Shay, and others.
